Classes were canceled for the day and students were being kept inside.

"They've been directed to stay in their dorms," said Carlos Holmes, a university spokesman. "We don't know where the shooter's at."

The students were shot near the Memorial Hall gymnasium around 1 a.m., according to a news release on the university's Web site.

1. I was wondering if VA Tech may have played factor in Fl incident
I think police officers would be less hypervigilant and more apt to use restraint if we had some type of meaningingful gun control in this country.

2. Meaningful gun control????
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 09:08 AM by virginia mountainman
Their is over 20,000 gun laws on the books...

"Gun Free" zones are killing fields, where the criminal KNOWS, he can pick and chose, and do what ever he wants, without fear of being confronted.

Just like turning a wolf in with the sheep. Would YOU, place a sign in your yard, declaring YOUR home a "Gun free zone"?? I thought not. Than WHY, do it to our children???

We have a situation NOW, that where the good people, that follow the law are disarmed, and the felons (whom by definition) do not follow ANY LAW is free to do as they wish.

Look at what "meaningful gun control" has done to DC, and DON"T blame Virginia, if Virginia guns are causing all these problems, why aint Virginia's crime rate anywhere NEAR D.C's??

EDIT, How many mass shootings have happend in places that where NOT gun free zones??? Answer me that qestion.

12. Sort of.
"I think you meant, 'There are over 20,000 gun laws on the books.'"

Then again, punctuation norms pale to triviality when one's rushing to claim inherent intellectual superiority by pointing out another's flaws, don't they?

3. This sounds like a regular crime, not a mass shooting
I don't think comparisons to Virginia Tech or Columbine would be appropriate. If this had happened in, say, Baltimore it would barely have been noticed outside the local newspapers.

4. That's what was initially thought at Va Tech.
Not saying you are wrong, but they are going to be very careful now to not just brush it off as a "regular crime" - it may be, but they will rightfully take precautions against further actions by the shooter.

7. Yeah, that's right...
A couple hours later he was chaining the door shut...

It didn't happen during school hours, though. Although I suppose he (the shooter is most likely male) could have shot up a dorm full of sleeping students.

5. Yup, something like a robbery, drug deal gone bad, bar fight, etc.
I hope they find the perpetrator.

Not to make light of the two wounded, but when I first clicked on this headline, I was afraid Bu$h had called out the National Guard to quell a student protest.

I've been having really bad flashbacks lately. Understandably.

10. Biden responds -
Sep. 21: U.S. Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) issued the following statement after hearing news that two Delaware State University students had been shot on campus early this morning:

“My thoughts and prayers this morning are with the two victims, their families, the student body, and the entire Delaware State community. Tragically, this community has suffered far too much violence and I urge everyone to come together to put an end to these senseless shootings and hostility.”

Today the University had been locked down right after the shootings and classes were cancelled. According to both Delaware and campus police, one male suspect is being sought.

The shootings occurred just before 1:00 a.m. on the Campus Mall, between the Memorial Hall gymnasium and Richard S. Grossley Hall, an administrative building. The female student was taken to Christiana Care hospital in Wilmington with a traumatic wound to the abdomen, and is in serious condition, said John Wilson, the deputy chief of Kent County Emergency Services. The male student was taken to Kent General Hospital in Dover, and is in stable condition.

11. I did my first two years of college there.
There is a lot of crime on that campus. I think the only reason this is drawing national attention is because of the VA Tech thing. Hell, UPenn had five shootings in the campus area last school year. You didn't hear a thing about it on the national news. It has to happen all in one day, and the shooter has to be a misanthrope. Spread out over a whole semester and occasioned by simple reasons like robbery, it doesn't count.

16. It can't be true.
This was a gun free zone. :sarcasm:

How many more times does this have to happen before certain heads get removed from certain dark orifices, and realization that gun free zones aren't working "as implemented" begins to sink in?
