In TV blitz, Clinton goes on Iraq offensive

by Jitendra Joshi 50 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Senator Hillary Clinton sharpened her attack on the Iraq war as she used a blizzard of television interviews Sunday to cast herself as the Democrats' presidential heir apparent.
........
On Iraq, the issue likely to most dominate next year's White House race, the senator said she would vote to halt war spending and curtail President George W. Bush's "failed policy" by starting to bring US troops home.

"There is no military solution," she said on CBS, appearing from a book-lined study in the Clintons' home in upstate New York, arguing that US troops were stuck in "a sectarian civil war."

"I voted against funding last spring. I will vote against funding again in the absence of any change in policy," she said, defending an evolution in her thinking since she backed Bush's drive for war in a 2002 Senate vote.

1. "evolution in her thinking"
"defending an evolution in her thinking since she backed Bush's drive for war in a 2002 Senate vote.

That's an interesting turn of phrase. It's a polite way of saying "second thoughts" or "I was wrong." (Admittedly, the writer used the term, not Clinton herself.)

Despite what people think of Clinton, even such a circumspect way of saying something like that is a welcome change from the likes of bush who, for no reason other than to protect his cronies' profiteering from his killing spree, portrays an unwillingness to ever have an "evolution in thinking" as some kind of "strength."

6. "Evolution in her thinking"...
is translated as "New polling data shows this is the tact that will gain her the most traction."

Until the next new polling data says otherwise...

7. I think the interesting turn of phrase is actually
"backed Bush's drive for war in a 2002 Senate vote"

the only Democrat who wanted war was Lieberman, and I find it disingenuous for the writer of this piece to imply otherwise.

4. Perhaps I'm too much of a purist, but I would really like to hear her
actually say "I was wrong", instead of merely taking a new position. Admittedly better than NOT changing her position, but it still smacks a little too much of *'s "never admit to being wrong".

5. Well, if you are a purist, then call me Judge Bradshaw or Colonel Pride!
I would say as goes this war, I am an outright Root and Brancher, a Leveller to the end, while Mrs. Clinton wishes to become the Vicar of Bray.
