3. is Petraus counting the soldiers with bullets in the front of their heads?
Or just the dead soldiers with bullets in the back of their heads? Funny math doesn't only apply to Iraqis. I think the real figure for dead soldiers is probably at least twice as high; plus, it doesn't include dead American mercenaries.

4. The Iraq War Memorial should be built on the Mall right now, and
the names of the dead should be added daily as they occur. Perhaps having to confront this awfulness in real time would bring our politicians to their senses.

There should be a separate manument with the names of the maimed. It simply won't do to confine their losses to the anonymity of a statistic.

11. It only took a few decades to build the WWII memorial.....
so prospects for your excellent idea are low. But you do bring up a good point- the wounded should be honored more- and an important first step would be to insure top health care.

8. Remember, that's just the tip of the iceberg
There are lots of civilian contractors working there - they're not included in the count.

There are private security firms - they're not in the count, although you can argue it's a risk they take because they do this for a living. Still, it's an indication of the situation.

Supposedly for the 150,000 troops or whatever the number is now, there's nearly a matching number of civilians (contractors and security, and a few journalists) there. And supposedly troops that were out of the country before they died don't count in the tallies, not to mention those who committed suicide after arriving.

If they would report "American Deaths" you'd have a MUCH bigger number.

And that's not even remotely close to the Iraqi deaths, either by our hands, or the hands of others. Saddam might have been a nasty dude, but he kept the place together. We have created a hell-hole that far outclipses anything Saddam did to his country and it's not remotely over yet.

9. I saw in my Sunday local paper where U.S. Rep. Walter Jones
(R) NC has signed himself 6,700 condolence letters for families who have lost someone in Iraq. Anyone else find that a little screwy given the official numbers?

16. "Bring The Boys Home" Deja Vu
1971 Freida Payne's record of "Bring The Boys Home" was so powerful it was banned
from Armed Forces radio stations.

Fathers are pleading, lovers are all alone
Mothers are praying-send our sons back home
You marched them away-yes, you did-on ships and planes
To the senseless war, facing death in vain

Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Turn the ships around, lay your weapons down

Can't you see 'em march across the sky, all the soldiers that have died
Tryin' to get home-can't you see them tryin' to get home?
Tryin' to get home-they're tryin' to get home
Cease all fire on the battlefield
Enough men have already been wounded or killed

Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Turn the ships around, lay your weapons down
(Mothers, fathers and lovers, can't you see them)

Oooh, oooh...
Tryin' to get home-can't you see them tryin' to get home?
Oooh, oooh...
Tryin' to get home-they're tryin' to get home

Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
Bring the boys home (bring 'em back alive)
What they doing over there, now (bring 'em back alive)
When we need them over here, now (bring 'em back alive)
What they doing over there, now (bring 'em back alive)
When we need them over here, now (bring 'em back alive)

Check it out it still Brings tears to my eyes

15. These casualties have dramatically increased, it appears.
I heard some guy on C-SPAN say that the ratio of wounded to dead in this war is dramatically higher than in any other. These are serious injuries that would have killed people in other wars. This is something to keep in mind when right-wingers go around saying that the number of US deaths is much smaller relative oher wars, and thereby implying that this war is a lot less dangerous and chaotic.
