WASHINGTON, 24 (UPI) -- Police in Washington are investigating an attack on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s intern that is believed to be a hate crime.

WTOP radio reported that the young man was attacked after leaving a nightclub early Sunday morning.

Police said the attacker used a derogatory term describing homosexuals before beating the man and sending him to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

UPDATE: Man Beaten After Leaving Gay Bar In Northwest
Attack Follows 10 Days After Beating Of Transgender Person

WASHINGTON -- A hate crime investigation is under way in the District after a man left a gay-friendly bar in the District and was beaten by a group of young men, authorities said.

It was the third time this month that someone has been attacked based on their sexual orientation. News4's Michael Flynn reported that while the victim of this latest attack was beaten, his attackers used anti-gay slurs.

The victim left a gay-friendly bar on Ninth Street near the Convention Center in Northwest at about 1 a.m. Saturday. Police said that about a block away from the bar, three young men approached the man on bicycles and assaulted him.

<snip>

The victim in the latest crime is in his 20s and is a temporary employee with the Human Rights Campaign, an organization that fights for the rights of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

He was not an intern to Speaker Pelosi.

Sorry for any confusion that the initial report may have caused.

6. that is so sad - I used to work in Ft. Lauderdale
and there was a girl I worked with, she told me her boyfriend and his buddies used to get drunk and wait outside of gay clubs, and harass those who came out alone.

WTF? I hope she was just being stupid. That is so horrid.

12. First thing that we should suspect --
There seems to be a lot of overt and aggressive stuff happening surrounding Congress --

It's a long trail of right-wing violence and it's increasing --

We can't know what happened here as yet, but I would look at this with suspicion, for openers.

11. Update: Apparently an employee of Human Rights Campaign, NOT a Pelosi intern
http://washblade.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=14461

... It was initially reported that the young man was an intern in the office of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, but it was later reported by WTOP that he was a Human Rights Campaign employee.

HRC confirmed to the Blade that he was a temporary employee hired to help organize HRC’s annual dinner.

He suffered a black eye, swollen lip and received stitches to the back of his head, according to an HRC spokesperson.

16. What an odd and ignorant statement.
The fact of the matter is that this young man was physically and verbally accosted. The fact that it happened in our nation's capital makes it all the more ugly and shameful. To hell with what would have happened to him in Iran -- it's almost as if you are somehow minimizing the reality of what has transpired.

20. Quick! where was Ahmadinejad? I'll bet he did it.
violence against anyone is a crime, straight, gay, whatever. this looks like they track people and lay traps for them. Where are the police, given the history of these events? Or are the police complicit and purposefully NOT safeguarding that area? I hate public surveillance as a matter of course, but some sort of protection would sure seem appropriate here.
