In his speech, Harper emphasized the "shared values" of Canada and the U.S., and seemed taken by surprise when an audience member asked why, despite these common traits, Canada was not hated internationally, as is the U.S.

But Liberal foreign affairs critic Ujjal Dosanjh said Harper was "simply acknowledging the truth." In light of the Prime Minister's comments, Dosanjh said he was puzzled that the government has set a foreign policy that is so closely aligned with the U.S. "I'm sorry to use the same old expression; he remains an echo of the U.S. whether it's on Afghanistan, whether it's on Kyoto," Dosanjh said in a telephone interview from Vancouver.

If Harper runs an election like John Tory is in Ontario right now (i.e. poorly), there's hope for a saner, more transparent, less jingoistic gov't next time. *fingers crossed*

Dion is in such big kaka, though. His only hope, I believe, is to bring some of Crétien's machine into his camp. But that would mean compromising his principles for power. If the party has their way, it could happen, but not if left to his own conscience.

I'm looking for significant growth for the NDP, as long as Layton stays away from appeasing the 905 region this time. (Reverse onus on gun crime!? From social democrats?! Who thought that one up?)

The Greens? Well, there are a couple of ridings in BC... but May keeps shooting herself in the foot and that new hip isn't going to help her keep pace.

Duceppe did poorly in those last by-elections. He's playing chicken with the most wiley POS PM we've had since Confederation.
If he brings on a vote of confidence and kicks off an election, he's my hero.

But you really should look deeper into the man and his politics. As well as being a separatist, he's a social democrat. That rates pretty high in my books.

"Impeachment is off the table" Blackwater, the State Department, etc, etc, etc, refusing to have anything to do with Congress and no one does squat about it except write letters.

As to the leadership in Canada, no, they are not light-weight so much as they actually have to answer to questions posed to them in the respective Legislatures and our news still actually reports the news, for the most part, which makes the leaders, both Provincially and Federally, accountable for their actions and decisions.

We have a surplus not a deficit, a dollar that has reached parity with the US dollar recently, etc. For "weak" leadership, that's not too damn bad, imo.

11. That is the beauty, imo, of our Parliamentary system...

Canadians were smart enough to make sure harper did NOT get a majority government and, instead, put him on a short leash so any damage he could do is limited. It was, in essence, a vote to say we will give you a chance to prove yourself and he has not been able to gain in that way at all.

At best, he may get another minority government out of the next election ie a continuation of the short leash, but there is no certainty because the Liberals are tied with them in popularity.
