Redford off to war with "Enemies" By Borys Kit
Thu Sep 27, 3:56 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Robert Redford is attached to direct "Against All Enemies," an adaptation of Richard A. Clarke's best-selling memoir about the Bush administration's handling of the al-Qaeda threat before and after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Clarke, a former U.S. terrorism czar, offered the ultimate insider's account into the nation's security apparatus, featuring a cast of power brokers including President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Clarke.

The book was published in March 2004 by Free Press and hit No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list, fueling intense criticism over the administration's security failures and its decision to go to war with Iraq.

Capitol Films is financing the feature, picking up the project from Columbia, which had shelved it.

2. Ironic, isn't it?
Columbia Records also rejected The Beatles, telling them that there was no market for "guitar bands".

Guess who picked them up?

Capitol.

6. Yeah, there's probably historical links, if not current-day financial links.

CBS = Columbia Broadcasting System (now owned by Viacom, & run by Sumner Redstone)

I have to believe that there's a lot of minority stock overlapping, if not control.

edit: On further (minimal) research, I don't see any historical linkage between Columbia Pictures and CBS. (Columbia is, of course, owned by Sony.)

5. Decca rejected the Beatles

EMI Parlophone signed them instead. (Capitol was EMI's American branch). The story about the "Groups of guitars are on their way out" turns out to have been a fabrication concocted by Brian Epstein for his book, "A Cellar-full of Noise". The A&R guy at Decca, Dick Rowe, had a choice between signing either The Beatles or Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. On the advice of one his underlings, Rowe chose...Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. And then later unfairly got saddled with the "Groups of guitars are on their way out, Mr.Epstein," bogus quote, courtesy of Epstein himself.

Rowe did later on sign the Rolling Stones to Decca (after learning about them from George Harrison!) But people today remember Rowe primarily because of what Epstein wrote.

7. Great book! I can't wait! It blows wide open the events of 9/11
minute by minute, with Condi hiding in the corner, wimpering. And it clearly says Cheney took over, turning off the monkey's phone.

Popcorn, please.
