Rice vows US is committed to tackling global warming

by Richard Ingham 2 hours, 54 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Thursday opened a conference of the world's 16 biggest emitters of greenhouse gas, pledging the United States took seriously the threat of global warming.

"What kind of world do we wish to inhabit? And what kind of world do we wish to hand on to future generations?" she asked at the start of two days of talks.

......

But Phil Clapp, president of the Washington-based National Environmental Trust (NET), said none of the initiatives Bush was putting on the table was new.

"They're programs that were launched in the past. This (meeting) is 90 percent for domestic political consumption."

is global warming.

But then they will quickly decide rice is a woman and black and she's either catering to the liberal myth or seriously confused.

As far as the rice and the bush adminstration doing anything about global warming - sorry, their worry is how they're going to stop people from imposing madatory filters to stop CFC's from being released from factorys. I'm sure they plan on living in underground fortresses when they've raped the earth so bad it's no longer livable on top.

17. The world Condi wishes to inhabit is one in which
there is endless war and endless war profiteering. It is one in which the United States takes over the Middle East by force and steals every last drop of oil. It is one in which people are randomly tortured and disappeared without reason or consequence. It is a world in which all pretense of Democracy is dropped and the US Becomes a rightwing dictatorship under neocon control. It is a world which is already well on the way toward being realized.

Climate talks draw world's biggest polluters
By Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S.-sponsored meeting of major emitting countries is aimed at supporting and accelerating the U.N. process on climate change, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice insisted on Thursday.

Skeptics, including dozens of protesters gathered outside the U.S. conference, have expressed concern the climate meeting might be an attempt to circumvent the United Nations process.

But in opening a two-day session at the State Department, Rice said the United States "supports the goals" of a U.N. summit on climate earlier this week "and we want this year's U.N. climate change conference in Indonesia to succeed."

- snip -

About 60 protesters, many of them from Greenpeace and other environmental groups, chanted anti-Bush administration slogans and held up placards outside the State Department while diplomatic security formed a line preventing them from getting into the building.

Bush climate goals marked by bureaucracy

By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The United States is lining up with China, India and the world's other biggest polluters in opposition to mandatory cuts in Earth-warming greenhouse gases sought by the United Nations and European countries.

President Bush's two-day climate meeting, opening Thursday, will emphasize creating more processes to find a solution to global warming, rather than setting firm goals for reducing carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for heating up the atmosphere.
.......

That has European leaders, who concede that the biggest polluting nations must be part of any solution, walking a thin line between skepticism and optimism.

"We can't do this on the basis of talking about talking or setting goals to set goals," John Ashton, a special representative on climate change for the British foreign secretary, said in an interview. "We know that a voluntary approach to global warming is about as effective as a voluntary speed limit sign in the road. We don't just need an approach that works; we need an approach that works very quickly.".......

Bush wants this 'summit' as part of his legacy.

I have to laugh---(but know this is serious as here we have a Pres who does not want to work with the world community to help solve climate problems!!)

25. And she could say this without laughing out loud?
Since when have the Bush administration been pro environment?

From the October 11, 2000 Bush/Gore debate:

BUSH: "I just -- I think there has been -- some of the scientists, I believe, Mr. Vice President, haven't they been changing their opinion a little bit on global warming? A profound scientist recently made a different --"

The point is, seven years ago Bush was casting doubt on the validity of the science behind global warming. Who's going to believe him now?
