US imposes sanctions on Myanmar leaders
Source: Associated Press

<snip>

"The Bush administration imposed economic sanctions against senior officials of Myanmar on Thursday, condemning the military-run government's crackdown on protesters.

The Treasury Department announced the sanctions against 14 senior officials of Myanmar, also known as Burma.

"The world is watching the people of Burma take to the streets to demand their freedom, and the American people stand in solidarity with these brave individuals," President Bush said in a statement.

"We feel admiration and compassion for the monks and peaceful protesters calling for democracy," Bush said. "Every civilized nation has a responsibility to stand up for people suffering under a brutal military regime like the one that has ruled Burma for too long."

2. Are these the kind of sanctions that will lead to the deaths of
innocent civilians under military rulers?

5. Bush and his forked tongue.
What do we have here? Bush, in his not-so-quiet desperation, is stage acting to save his filthy reputation on the world's stage.

I doubt that anything Bush says or does will dramatically change the military criminals in Burma, however, he could help to stop some of their crimes, such as the tortue at Insein prison, by directing the world's focus on what these criminals continue to do.

If in Bush's sad, sorry desperation even a tiny amount of human suffering is eased, all the better for Burma.

8. If he really wanted to save his filthy reputation ...
... he'd have sent in Blackwater mercenaries with CIA support and the dictatorship would be over. That would even be a P.R. coup for Blackwater.

The Bushies theatrical protestations today are bullshit - the Burmese dictatorship wouldn't have existed a year, much less for decades, without the toleration/tacit approval of the U.S..

4. "No, no, you Burmese, that's not how you suppress dissent...
"...you need to do it the Kinder and Gentler way, the Bush way. Like Putin in Russia has learned. You can do Tyranny, if you do it the Bush Way, not the Old Way."

Bushler's criticism of Mynamar is hypocrtitical beyond words and funny, given what this nation is poised to become after one or two more national disaters or "terrorist" attacks.

Like Brezhnev criticizing Pinochet...

6. I'm clearly no fan of Bush
But I'd rather he speak out than not.
I mean, people are being shot in the streets. It's hard to watch people being shot in the streets, and if he's speaking out against that, it's one of the few things I wont have a problem with.

7. There's no real money being made in Burma ...
... because the military dictatorship has all but driven out foreign investors from the country.

That's the *only* reason you're hearing anything from the Bushies about this. (not Bush himself - he's probably too drunk to notice)

If there were oil there, Blackwater mercenaries would be the ones shooting Japanese journalists.

9. Good point, but also "What OmelasExpat said..."
The Bushies are always ready with a quick word in support of the democartic ideals they hate. (actually, I think it is probably a not so surpressed envy they get when they watch what the "Burmese" get to do to THEIR liberal intellegntsia and protesting college kids)

SO LONG AS TALK IS CHEAP and does not have to be matched with ACTIONS.

Oh, THEN BusHitler is willing to expund for DAYS about Liberty and Freedom.
