Army plans to increase size of the force more quickly
by Jim Mannion

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Army is making plans to expand its active and reserve forces by 74,000 troops in four years instead of five to ease stress on the force, the service's secretary said Thursday.

Army Secretary Pete Geren said the plan was under discussion with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who favors adding troops more quickly to the army, which has shouldered the biggest burden of the war in Iraq.

"We concluded that we could expedite the growth by a year and that would help relieve stress on the force. And Secretary Gates has been supportive of the concept and we're working through the ... details," Geren told reporters.

In one of his first acts as defense secretary, Gates set in motion plans to increase the size of the active army to 547,000 by 2012 in large part by adding seven thousand troops a year over five years. Geren said accelerating the army's growth by a year would cost an additional 2.7 to 2.8 billion dollars, and would require recruiting more than 80,000 troops a year.

7. That was conspicuously left out of the conversation wasn't it?
What do conservatives fear with every fiber of their being?

- Swearing to tell the truth
- The Fairness Doctrine
- The Draft
- Hate crimes legislation

Don't make me actually do something for our country and don't hold limbaugh and the rest of the right wing haters accountable for what they say and don't stifle my right to turn my hateful thoughts into physical action and for god's sake don't force me to be honest. I'm a god fearing patriotic american dontcha know.

3. What will their strategy be for enticing chickenhawks to enlist?
We will only send liberals to places where people can get hurt? You won't be expected to do anything macho but we will give you the opportunity (and medals) to pose as if you were?

5. I so completely, utterly, misread this
The spam filter here at work has a lot of false positives 'cause of the number of mailing lists I'm on, so I end up wading through spam looking for goodies. Outlook long since said "you can't have that many rules".

So I've spent my morning confronted with the expression "increase size" being devoted to a specific issue.

Hence first time around... oh, nevermind, you can figure it out for yourself.

When I watched the Star Wars movies, the concept of The Force resonated with me.

So, second time around, I got the notion that the armed forces was somehow going to modify The Force and wondered how they'd gotten ahead of the technology.

Third time around, I tried to merge the first two.

I need sleep.

10. "Extend" I think, is the new pill they advertise...I laugh my ass of with
those men who claim they become 'bigger' when they take the pill??

I like their lead in too. "who would have tought 5 years ago that there was a pill that would actually increase..."

and the 'Dr.' who invented it is ashamed to say the word 'penis'...I recon cause if you actually imply it enlarges the penis you could be sued for false advertising?

9. Yeah right. Just like the last time they tried to increase the number of volunteers.
They're still not meeting the quotas they re-set from that debacle.

11. A Simple way to get more recruits.
Give them Jail sentences for a crime they did or did not do, then give them a choice, jail or Army.
