Jena 6 DA will try defendant as juvenile
Source: UPI

The prosecutor in the case against Jena 6 defendant Mychal Bell said Thursday he won't appeal a court decision to put the matter in a Louisiana juvenile court.

"We will now go forward in juvenile court," Reed Walters, LaSalle Parish, La., district attorney, said during a news conference. He said he "tentatively" reached his decision last week but needed to research and consult on the matter before announcing his plan.

Reed said he based his decision on what was best for the victim, Justin Barker. Barker and his family "are on board" with his decision, Reed said.

1. Does that mean Bell can get bail?
Finally?! :grr: Even in adult court, holding a defendant on an aggravated assault charge without bail is highly irregular.

Reed said he based his decision on what was best for the victim, Justin Barker.

If you believe that, I have a bridge in Minneapolis I'd like to show you. It does need a little TLC... no, the phone call from Gov. Blanco had not a thing to do with Nifong Walters' sudden flip-flo;. Not at all. :sarcasm:

9. In the words of the immortal Marv Albert, "Yyyyyyessssssss!"
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/09/27/national/main3305441.shtml

(CBS/AP) Mychal Bell, a black Louisiana teenager who once faced an attempted murder charge in the beating of a white classmate, should soon be free on bail after spending more than 10 months in prison.

LaSalle Parish Sheriff Carl Smith told CBS News that a bond of $45,000 had been set for the young man's release. Previously, the courts had declined to grant bail in this case.

Darlene Garrison Narcisse, who is with Cut-Rate Bail Bonding, told CBS News affiliate KSLA reporter Tania Francoise that she has posted $4500, 10 percent of the bond amount. She added that Bell is being transported from the Renaissance Home for Youth in Rapides Parish to the LaSalle Parish Courthouse in Jena where he and his family will sign the papers to secure his release.

11. Let's go with his story, at least for the public.
Otherwise we have a dem governor putting political pressure on a DA to adopt a certain position in court after the matter became highly politicized.

Now, I can see how that's entirely different, say, from having a president put pressure on a DA to not pursue a politically charged case.

Walters *does* report to Blanco or one of Blanco's appointees, doesn't he?

4. The DA said he researched the case before his announcement, but ...
Walters said he did not know if the ruling would allow Bell to be released from jail.

5. The white people who kidnapped raped and tortured the woman in VA
Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 02:58 PM by xultar
are out on bail. They only had 100,000 over their heads. Mychael has 90,000 on his. He's done nothing CLOSE to what they did to that woman.

Plus one of the people in VA had a conviction for manslaughter and spent 5 years in jail.

No fucking JUSTICE no fucking PEACE! :grr:

10. I have not seen it reported anywhere that the VA suspects were
able to make that bail and are out. So, if you claiming it, can you provide a link?

7. after the malicious prosecution, Walters should be off the case...
And he should be disbarred, just like that Nifong guy in the Duke scandal.
