E. coli in Topps brand frozen burgers (331,000 pounds of patties recalled)
Source: AP

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Bacterial contamination first confirmed in New York State has led to a nationwide recall of Topps frozen hamburgers.

The Centers for Disease Control says 21 people in eight states have fallen ill after eating burgers possibly contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Two cases in New York and one in Florida are confirmed as being linked to the ground beef, and 18 others are under investigation. No one has died, but several are recovering in the hospital.

Visit the USDA website for a complete list of recalled items.

1. I only purchase raw ground beef from local grocers who grind it themselves.
I don't know if that's safer, but it seems like it.

6. But . . .. how do you wash ground beef?
The FDA has a 17% permissable fecal matter on carcasses . . . . !!!

Did you ever watch any of the cooking shows -- I cringe every time I see them open a package of "meat" and put it directly in a pan to cook or to mix with other ingredients.

Presumably, either they simply overlook the need to wash "meat" or the industry doesn't want the connotation that "meat" is dirty.

7. I scrape steaks and pork chops to eliminate bone fragments. Maybe that helps.
Solid meat doesn't tend to be what they worry about anyway.

9. Killing E coli
In the past, the U.S. Agriculture Department recommended cooking ground beef until it was no longer pink in the middle or until the juices ran clear.

But new research shows even brown burgers may not have reached a temperature high enough to kill the dangerous form of E. coli bacteria known as O157:H7.

As a result, the federal government now recommends that consumers use a meat thermometer to cook ground beef until it registers 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Instant read" meat thermometers -- for use toward the end of the cooking time -- will read the temperature in 15 seconds. The thermometer should be inserted into the thickest part of the hamburger patty.

3. Barr
Maybe Barbara Bush can donate the tainted meat to the New Orleans School District, provided they agree to buy millions of dollars worth of whatever software her son's pedalling these days. It would be , you know 'a pretty good deal' for all.

4. I don't eat beef or shop at Wal-Mart.
I prefer a cruelty free and less Republican E. coli.

5. THIS is the epitome of capitalism; it's where capitalism defeats itself ---
Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 02:56 PM by defendandprotect
Unregulated capitalism is NOT about competititon . . . .
it's about killing the competititon --
greed moves corporations to cut corners which finally cause them to go out of business.

We have a long, long trail of corporations already gone because of this and because of the "killing of other corporations" that is the central core of unregulated capitalism.

Unregulated capitalism is also responsible for highly speculative markets and scams --
i.e., akin to organized crime.
