Sharpton: Bail being posted for Mychal Bell
Edited on Thu Sep-27-07 04:50 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: CNN

Bail was being posted Thursday for Mychal Bell, a black teenager accused of beating a white classmate, after a district attorney's announcement that he would not appeal a higher court's decision moving Bell's case to juvenile court, according to the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Bell's bail was set at $45,000, Sharpton said. The paperwork was being worked out, he said, and the bail bondsman was at the courthouse.

Earlier Thursday, Bell was moved from jail to a juvenile facility, according to his attorney, Lewis Scott.

LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters said his decision not to appeal was based on what he believed is best for the victim in the case.

"While I believe that a review would have merit ... I believe it is in the best interest of the victim and his family not to delay this matter any further and move it to its conclusion," Walters told reporters.

much faith in the police and especially in NO..I believe the police there (large sum of them) are very racist...

5. This is a small town about 150 miles NW of NO
the police there are probably even more racist. We've already established that their judicial system is. :grr:

2. Since the DA has backed down and all 6 will be charged
as juveniles, it hardly made any sense locking him up like a serial killer.

That being said, I hope somebody gets through to him that assault is a bad thing, no matter how appropriate he thinks the target might be.

6. I think
"I hope somebody gets through to him that assault is a bad thing"

I think it would be more appropriate to get that across to ALL involved including the white assailants. The town could use reconciliation. Also, according to the Coach, Mychael Bell did not hit Barker.

12. How much rehabilative power do you think a jail will have on someone who is ..
likely not guilty of the crime?

13. 45k is outrageous. Insane.
Sure, $4,500 isn't that bad -- with the media attention, I'm sure it's easily raised. But 45 thousand? Really, is a poor black juvenile from Louisiana being watched by hundreds of journalists and millions of people really a 45 grand flight risk?

They should have OR'd him and gotten it over with, the same as they would have done with anyone else not in the newspapers.

Instead they're STILL trying to save face, STILL!

14. I don't want to sound like I'm on the wrong side, but
it is his 5th offense and I don't know the facts behind the 1st 4.

15. The number of offenses is irrelevant
The number of offenses is irrelevant. Bail isn't set as a likelihood of guilt, it's set as a determination of flight risk. Or supposed to be, at any rate. And ESPECIALLY at the juvenile level, it depends on what your priors are.

With his media attention, he's not much of a flight risk, and thus a $45,000 bind is what the judge determined to look good to the public.

16. IF the find him guilty of what ever he already did the time
I hope Michael Bell can find it in his heart, after time, to forgive America.
Forgive America for still being a country where this kind of injustice happens
Forgive America where the city where is from didn't rise up and stop the DA.
Forgive America where the mainstream media chose to ignore the horrible injustice and not until over 300,000 petitions were sent to the media and the DA.
Forgive America for questioning his innocent just because he is black.

I hope he can heal but can he ever forgive America ?????

17. Have you given consideration that the OTHER charges may be
as trumped up as this charge? The "justice" system, the judge, and the prosecutor in Jena lacks creditibility.

18. Save face because Bell is the lynchpen that makes this implausible story plausible
Think about it the coach testified that another person struck Barker. The case only seem plausible IF there is a person with previous charges of aggression. Otherwise, we will have to wonder, why would a person with no previous history of aggression decides to strike Barker.
