BREAKING NEWS: Hal Daub (R-Ne) to exit Senate race

It appears Republican Hal Daub is prepared to pull out of the U.S. Senate race after only two weeks.

Daub scheduled an unspecified "major announcement" for 9 a.m. Friday at the Omaha Press Club.

He is expected to announce that the time is not right for his campaign, said three people close to the former Omaha mayor, speaking on condition of anonymity.


Former Omaha Mayor and U.S. Rep. Hal Daub, with wife Mary by his side, announced his bid for the U.S. Senate on Sept. 17 at Western Nebraska Regional Airport in Scottsbluff.

His decision comes on the heels of GOP powerhouse Mike Johanns' expected entry into the race.

Not that I give a rat's about Daub, but the more protracted, expensive and bruising the race for the Rep side, the better our chances to take this one (not that they are much if Kerrey doesn't run. Kleeb is too much of a long shot to beat Johanns, Fahey wouldn't sell well in the west, and nobody else would make a dent).
