Jennifer Granholm used the "bully pulpit" of her office to deliver a five-minute TV and radio speech that was broadcast live statewide tonight from her ceremonial office shortly after 6:05 p.m., during which she addressed the budget crisis and the potential of a partial government shutdown.
"Like you, I have been angered by months of inactivity," she said. "But I am hopeful. Productive negotiations are underway."
Granholm also said that at 4 p.m. today she issued an order to begin the process of a shutdown of non-essential services midnight Friday. Without a balanced budget, the state can not continue to write checks, she said.
Granholm did not elaborate about which departments would be affected but she did say that "dangerous felons will be kept in prison.

Does this affect any of the DUers in Michigan? I've been watching the news coming from detroit (it's one of the stations we get up here in Canada), and apparently, there is some pretty big stuff going on there.
The casinos, licensing boards, and the state itself, are being shut down. What are your feelings about this?
