LANSING -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm used the "bully pulpit" of her office to deliver a five-minute TV and radio speech that was broadcast live statewide tonight from her ceremonial office shortly after 6:05 p.m., during which she addressed the budget crisis and the potential of a partial government shutdown.

"Like you, I have been angered by months of inactivity," she said. "But I am hopeful. Productive negotiations are underway."

Granholm also said that at 4 p.m. today she issued an order to begin the process of a shutdown of non-essential services midnight Friday. Without a balanced budget, the state can not continue to write checks, she said.

Granholm did not elaborate about which departments would be affected but she did say that "dangerous felons will be kept in prison.

Does this affect any of the DUers in Michigan? I've been watching the news coming from detroit (it's one of the stations we get up here in Canada), and apparently, there is some pretty big stuff going on there.

The casinos, licensing boards, and the state itself, are being shut down. What are your feelings about this?

3. Didn't the Reds create this budget crisis and Granholm inherited it?
And now the Reds are blocking most of her efforts to overcome this crisis?

IMO, this is the scenario that will happen at the Federal level in 2009. BushCo will leave the White House (we hope!) and the new Administration will realize the true extent of damage done to our country. Every effort to contain and repair the damage will be obstructed by the Reds and their reich wing megaphone, the MSM.

I sure hope the Federal Dems find their cojones soon, and I wish Gov. Granholm and the people of the state of Michigan the best in their quest to recover from the effects of the Red Plague...

4. From a Michigander
Yes, things are getting very stressful here. Granholm inherited a big deficit from Republican Engler and the situation has been made worse by so very many automotive jobs going overseas. Michigan has been really hit hard by outsourcing. School enrollment down as people leave the state for jobs.

My husband is a state employee so we'll feel the pinch. At the same time I do not want Granholm or the Dems to back down.

Michigan is a wonderful, beautiful state...we love it here but who knows what the future will bring.
