Hundreds of protesters marched through downtown Portland today, carrying "Impeach Bush" signs and chanting to end the war in Iraq and bring the troops home. Although there's no official tally of the number of marchers at the event, protesters packed a full city block and included seniors, war veterans and a number of children.
Mona Warner showed up for the march and rally with her father, Bob Warner, who wore a T-shirt that said, "Democracy is not a spectator sport. I think this war was ill conceived, and our president has put us in a mess we never should have gotten into," said Mona Warner, a recently retired teacher from Hillsboro.
Organizers said 55 local organizations joined to sponsor the march, which began at 11:30 a.m. in the North Park blocks. The route wound through downtown, much of it on Broadway, and ended at the World Trade Center on Southwest Salmon Street.

"I'm certainly opposed to terrorism, and I don't think we're making the world safer by being in Iraq," said Janet Dietz, a PDX Peace Coalition volunteer who manned a booth at the end of the parade route distributing anti-war literature. "I'm here because the cost of the war is terrible in human costs, moral costs and dollars."
