Britsh MPs visiting the Pentagon to discuss America's stance on Iran and Iraq were shocked to be told by one of President Bush's senior women officials: "I hate all Iranians."

And she also accused Britain of "dismantling" the Anglo-US-led coalition in Iraq by pulling troops out of Basra too soon.

The all-party group of MPs say Debra Cagan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Coalition Affairs to Defence Secretary Robert Gates, made the comments this month.

But when The Mail on Sunday spoke to four of the six MPs, three confirmed privately that she made the remark and one declined to comment. The other two could not be contacted.

The Daily Mail is a very unreliable paper indeed. They are sensational, xenophobic and right-wing, and should not be taken seriously on anything. I have not so far been able to find anything about the incident on the BBC site, or the Guardian, Independent, Times or Torygraph. So they may have invented some of it to increase their sales - nothing would surprise me from them. On the other hand, nothing would surprise me from Bushie Republicans either.

Do you mean you think that the BBC is government-controlled? It isn't; though they've been a little more nervous about annoying the government since the David Kelly scandal. But I don't think the government would think they're successfully controlling the BBC! I think there is occasional government influence on our media; but rather little. The real problem here is IMO the reverse: the influence of certain media, run by right-wing moguls, on the voters and government. Rupert Murdoch is the best-known and probably most powerful example. But the tabloid press also has a very negative influence. The Daily Mail, which was quoted here, is our highest-circulation tabloid and is very right-wing; very xenophobic and currently, in particular, Islamophobic; very hostile to immigrants and asylum-seekers, Travellers and Gypsies; gays, single parents, and anyone who is not a conventional middle-class Little Englander. Unfortunately, they do influence, as well as reflecting public attitudes. None of this, admittedly, would explain this particular article, so it *may* be correct. On the other hand, they are also known to distort info just to be sensational and sell papers.
