Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan will receive the 35th annual Thomas Merton Award for her ongoing work protesting U.S. involvement in Iraq, where her son was killed in 2004.
The award is given annually by the Thomas Merton Center for Peace and Social Justice to a national or international individual "struggling for peace." The event will be held Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Station Square hotel.
Ms. Sheehan is one of the founders of the Gold Star Families for Peace, which formed in January 2005 seeking the end of U.S. presence in Iraq and providing support to families of fallen soldiers.
The death of her son, Spc. Casey Sheehan, in Sadr City, spurred her anti-war fervor. Ms. Sheehan, sometimes called "Peace Mom," gained international attention in August 2005 when she camped for an extended period in a ditch near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Seats can be reserved online at www.thomasmertoncenter.org or by calling the center at 412-361-3022.
