Thomas Merton Center to honor activist Sheehan
Monday, October 01, 2007
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan will receive the 35th annual Thomas Merton Award for her ongoing work protesting U.S. involvement in Iraq, where her son was killed in 2004.

The award is given annually by the Thomas Merton Center for Peace and Social Justice to a national or international individual "struggling for peace." The event will be held Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Station Square hotel.

Ms. Sheehan is one of the founders of the Gold Star Families for Peace, which formed in January 2005 seeking the end of U.S. presence in Iraq and providing support to families of fallen soldiers.

The death of her son, Spc. Casey Sheehan, in Sadr City, spurred her anti-war fervor. Ms. Sheehan, sometimes called "Peace Mom," gained international attention in August 2005 when she camped for an extended period in a ditch near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Seats can be reserved online at www.thomasmertoncenter.org or by calling the center at 412-361-3022.

1. What a becoming honor Cindy.... congratulations. Thomas and
Cindy share the same distiction and criticisim for their anti war views. Thomas Merton and his peace work was criticized by catholics and noncatholics as unacceptable actions for a Monk. Cindy for being a grieving mother. It was not acceptable to question what was the honor of her sons death was. She was somehow suppose to be quiet and go away. Also both did not have the support of their Catholic church for their work towards peace. Bring them Home.......................

3. So, when will Congress pass its resolution?
Surely the overwrought ninnies on the right will go all vapors on us, clutching their pearls and demanding smelling salts, and then demanding that Congress pass a resolution condemning the Thomas Merton Center. Such an affront to the Republic has never been seen in all the years of its existence! Breathy and breathless all at once, as they denounce such left-wing concepts as peace and anti-war!
