Yale Law, Newly Defeated, Allows Military Recruiters
Source: New York Times

By THOMAS KAPLAN
Published: October 1, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Sept. 30 — For five years, Yale Law School has fought to restrict military recruiters from its job fairs because of the Pentagon’s policy that bars openly gay or bisexual people from the military. But with the federal government threatening to withhold $350 million in grants if the university does not assist the recruiters, that fight will all but end on Monday.

After an appeals court ruled in favor of the Defense Department on Sept. 17, the law school said it would allow recruiters from the Air Force and Navy to participate in a university-sponsored job interview program for law students on Monday afternoon. For now, the legal battle to stop the recruiters is over, said Robert A. Burt, a Yale law professor and the lead plaintiff in the case.

“The judges who hold office at the moment disagree with us,” Professor Burt said. “We must wait for history to vindicate our position.”

At question is a statute called the Solomon Amendment, which allows the federal government to withhold funds from universities that do not extend the same welcome to military recruiters as they do to other recruiters....

What a dumb, dumb law.

5. Woudn't doing that revert the law to what it was before DADT, which has
that gays were not allowed to serve at all?

8. OK...that's not what I meant.
I mean to repeal any disqualifiers to military service for sexual orientation.

12. S&B is not officially a part of Yale
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 01:28 PM by KamaAina
it is actually controlled by the shadowy "Russell Trust Association".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skull_and_Bones#Asset_Management_.26_Financial_Associations

The Russell Trust Association is the corporate parent for the Skull and Bones society.

In 1943, by special act of the Connecticut state legislature, its trustees were granted an exemption from filing corporate reports with the Secretary of State, which is normally a requirement.
:tinfoilhat:

edit: Thus, Yale couldn't close S&B if it wanted to.

4. Anyone at Yale stupid enough to sign up shouldn't BE at Yale. Besides, if you can afford
Yale, you don't fit the mold of a recruit anyway.

11. Perhaps some clarification is in order. This time, this war, this commander in chief.
all due respect to John Kerry.

9. They should surround the table with GBLT students
all of them asking to join up while being openly gay. They would pack up and leave before long, besides, students who will have a degree from Yale don't join up in droves.

10. Oh SNAP! That's even better than my plan
which involves hanging a huge banner behind and over their table that reads "Warning: These recruiters do not comply with Yale policy regarding non-discrimination against GLBT students."
