Soldiers hunt dissidents in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar - Soldiers announced that they were hunting pro-democracy protesters in Myanmar's largest city Wednesday and the top U.S. diplomat in the country said military police were pulling people out of their homes during the night.

Military vehicles patrolled the streets before dawn with loudspeakers blaring that: "We have photographs. We are going to make arrests!"

Shari Villarosa, the acting U.S. ambassador in Myanmar, said in a telephone interview that people in Yangon were terrified. "From what we understand, military police ... are traveling around the city in the middle of the night, going into homes and picking up people," she said.

Villarosa said embassy staff had gone to some monasteries in recent days and found them completely empty. Others were barricaded by the military and declared off-limits to outsiders.

9. Only the Daily Mail is reporting mass executions so far ...
The Daily Mail's source is a "former intelligence officer" who of course has no reason to mislead/lie whatsover right? Maybe to save his own ass?

I have no illusions about the intent and record of this junta, but I'm in no rush to assume they've slaughtered monks.

The BBC is reporting they will be sent to camps in the north: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=3012697

5. The subject line could have been.....
soldiers hunt dissidents in Iraq........whats different when you come right down to it.....the dissidents in Iraq are trying to take their country back and are being hunted down by their occupiers.
Sorry, didnt mean to hijack your very fine post.
Whats happening in Bangkok is horrific and the world should be doing something about it. Just as it should be doing something more about the occupation of Iraq by an invading army.
