Bush Vetoes Child Health Insurance Plan
Source: Associated Press

President Bush, in a confrontation with Congress, on Wednesday vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have dramatically expanded children's health insurance.

It was only the fourth veto of Bush's presidency, and one that some Republicans feared could carry steep risks for their party in next year's elections. The Senate approved the bill with enough votes to override the veto, but the margin in the House fell short of the required number.

The White House sought as little attention as possible, with the president wielding his veto behind closed doors without any fanfare or news coverage.

65. Here's why.
GOP core helps Bush get his way

The same folks who brought you the Iraq war, the refusal to act on the health insurance crisis, the fiscal meltdown that leaves crucial government functions underfunded while managing to drive up the national debt are still bringing you: the Iraq war, the refusal to act on health insurance and a looming showdown over spending priorities that leaves the fiscal meltdown unaddressed.

<snip>

Republicans in Congress -- especially in the House -- were supposed to learn from their mistakes and stop backing themselves into ideological corners that are way outside of mainstream thinking. They didn't.

<snip>

The Democratic gains in the 2006 congressional elections means there are fewer Republican moderates -- they were thrown out of office, particularly in the Northeast and Midwest, making those regions bluer. This makes it nearly impossible to cobble together a bloc of swing Republican moderates needed, say, to override a presidential veto of an enormously popular bill to provide health care to kids.

So even as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee hammers at the kids insurance issue with radio advertisements and robo calls, there's not much chance of turning around enough Republican votes to override Bush's health-insurance veto. There are only about two dozen Republicans on the group's target list, and they are in regions such as the Southwest and Midwest, where the Democrats are tilling ground for the 2008 elections. "We'd prefer to get these kids the health care they need," says Jennifer Crider, a DCCC spokeswoman.

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071003/OPINION/710030321/1002/OPINION

In other words, most of the Republicans who survived the 2006 election are hardliners.

3574438, Kerry: Bush SCHIP Veto Jeopardizes Health Care for Millions of Children
Posted by Mass on Wed Oct-03-07 10:12 AM

WASHINGTON D.C. – Sen. John Kerry issued the following statement today, following President Bush’s veto of legislation that reauthorizes and extends the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The legislation passed the House and Senate by a broad bi-partisan majority, and Kerry pushed aggressively for additional SCHIP funds during the Senate Finance Committee’s development of the plan, and vowed to work hard to overturn the veto.

“Today with a single stroke of his veto pen, President Bush single-handedly jeopardized health care for millions of poor children,” Kerry said. “The President’s twisted rationale that he opposes ‘federalizing’ health care is a hollow excuse for undermining a successful effort to give Governors the control and the tools to deliver health care for kids who desperately need it. President Bush conveniently forgot that he ran for reelection with a promise to give health care to millions more children and now as a lame duck president he is working to take it away. It seems George Bush was for kids’ health care before he was against it. An overwhelming majority in Congress will fight to keep our promises to America’s children, and we will work to override this cynical, callous veto.

56. You know the reason for the disconnect...
...between this hand-wringing and crying over aborted fetuses while allowing something like foster care and uninsured children to exist in a so-called "compassionate" society...

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !!!

Listen, it behooves our economy to have an underclass of poor women with no options for birth control and education. It's better for the System if women are kept down, barefoot and pregnant. But once the child is born, those in power can keep the divide-and-conquer philosophy going by holding them up as a threat to our "way of life". Just a bunch of welfare queens.

As for the Stem Cell opposition, the pretend, sanctimonious crying for blastocysts, I'm sure that's coming from Big Pharma. Imagine, if we could cure diseases with a single treatment--how that would eat into their profits of "maintenance drugs" for what are now chronic conditions.

And the stupid fundies actually believe Bushco cares about their anti-abortion cause! Wake up, Idiots! A real Christian wouldn't veto medical care for sick children!

When will this STOP?

Consider this: The bill would cost $35 billion over what -- 10 years. The Iraq war has/will cost at least $1,000 billion (one trillion dollars). This is insane.

As pointed out by another poster, here the repukes go ranting and raving about saving SINGLE CELL EMBRYOS, yet they want poor kids to get sick and die. This is insane.

BUSH TO US: I don't give a rat's ass about any of you!!! When will US get the message???

We Remain Committed to Making SCHIP Into Law—With or Without the President’s Support

Today the President had an opportunity to sign a bipartisan bill that will bring health care to 10 million children in families struggling to make ends meet. Instead, President Bush used his cruel veto pen to say ‘I forbid 10 million children from getting the health benefits they deserve.

Despite the President’s veto, we will continue to work with a bipartisan majority in Congress and 43 governors from across the country to increase support for SCHIP in the House so we can override the veto and provide 10 million children the health coverage they need and deserve.

The President chose to block a bill with strong bipartisan consensus—which has so much potential for good—to force Congress to mount a veto override effort. We remain committed to making SCHIP into law—with or without the President’s support.

29. Hopefully, this gets overridden.
Not even the repuke congresscritters are stupid enough to vote to uphold this veto.

Wait a minute... they probably are!

Anyway, it's ridiculous that * is vetoing this over just $2 billion a year! What's that about - 6 weeks in Iraq funding?

SCHIP is necessary for those people that fall through the proverbial health-care cracks - like contract workers - that don't have employer-paid healthcare. A family of four having to pay for their own healthcare coverage costs about $2,000 a month (I'm referring to the kind of HMO/PPO low co-pay plans, not the ultra-high deductible stuff) - and if you have any kind of health issues - no insurance company will ever cover you. Before my wife and I found non-contract employment, there was no way for us to afford healthcare - and we made too much for SCHIP under the current guidelines. Eventually, I insured only my son with inpatient-only coverage for $75 a month.

So, thanks Chimpy... you evil fuck!

Hundreds gather in Lancaster to protest Bush policies
Article Last Updated: 10/03/2007 10:49:49 AM EDT

LANCASTER -- President Bush's supporters weren't the only ones prepared for his visit Wednesday to Lancaster County.

About 400 protesters gathered Tuesday night in downtown Lancaster. The shouting, banner-waving protest was a marked contrast to the silent candlelight vigils that have been more typical of Lancaster's anti-war protests.

In addition to opposing the war in Iraq, the protesters took issue with the president's positions on other issues, such as children's health insurance.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KsF-RiMzGpk

Not enough money in the treasury for anything like taking care of the children because all of it is allocated where it should be: on war spending. War-mongering, Katrina-ignoring, Propaganda-instilling, Constitution-reducing, scandal-covering, 911Warning-ignoring, captive-torturing, administration of George W Bush. An oral sex encounter was enough to impeach Clinton but all the crimes against this "president" are not?! How many days are left?!

50. Congress may be able to override
Edited on Wed Oct-03-07 12:17 PM by ProudDad
There are a number of republicans running in '08 who don't want to see the ads that will come out against them if they vote against this bill. A large number of repubs voted for it already...

"The Senate voted to limit debate Thursday on legislation to expand children’s health insurance, paving the way for a final vote to clear the bill and send it to President Bush.

"The 69-30 vote to limit debate on a motion to concur in amendments by the House would be sufficient, if replicated on final passage, to override a threatened Bush veto.

"But the 265-159 House vote Sept. 25 was not. A two-thirds vote of those present and voting is required in each chamber, and supporters acknowledge that the measure does not currently have enough Republican support in the House for an override."

They will need 2/3 of the House Members "PRESENT AND VOTING" to override in the House. Of course, certain repukes who are in danger might be conveniently absent so an absolute count of 290 votes may not be a requirement for the override vote.

---------

bush is absolutely correct in his assessment though. This is a feeble attempt to move toward a single-payer system of financing health care in this country -- to join the Civilized world in the decision to become communities where Health Care is concerned.

From the point of view of the mean-spirited, Aw, let's say it, EVIL randian wing of public opinion, this bill is another camel's nose under the tent toward Universal Single-Payer -- the ONLY solution to the problem of Health Care in this country.

It's God's will if they die from a staff infection because they can't get a perscription for penicillin.

Every day I find a new reason to loathe this *resident. I have never been so irritated by, nor have I ever lost so much sleep over, someone I've never even met. It's a bit surprising that the Senate passed the bill by such a wide margin, whereas Congress did not - a real damn shame they didn't get the two-thirds majority to override *resident's veto.

79. Talk About a Nation Doomed to Collapse
I can't really blame Bush alone anymore. We the people have been slowly putting into office a series of worthless, fascistic, criminals, theocrats and greed-besotted menials that have been stealing the life's blood of our nation. We have accepted over last several decades a series of demonizations (teen mothers, races, immigrants, feminists and liberals) that has allowed us to completely loose control of the institutions that drain our wealth and slaughter world citizens.

This was all done through elections - we let it happen; we made it happen. And now we are f*cking screwed. The veto will no doubt be sustained, and the children will suffer and die through lack of care. And the arrogant a&&wipe will smirk at his marginal base of billionaires, war criminals and christo-fascists and flash his self-satisfied smile: he stood up for low taxes and no benefits for the great unwashed.

And then we'll all move on to the next debacle as our civilization continues its collapse.

you commented about elections something that they throw to us every four years, to make it seem we are in control, but if we had more than 40% of citizens voting in the last election, we would have made more of an impact, but as you say we made and let this happen, hopefully, we will find the will to turn this around some how.

Think of the children. Vote Democratic."

91. Interesting - this is one veto he decides to sign
He and his handlers really do not want this bill. How transparent can they be? He has refused to veto so many bills during his reign, that with this one being watched by so many, I guess he and the handlers are afraid of American outcry and /or others in the government would ignore his notorious 'refusal to enforce' new legislation. They no longer care how the WH is perceived anymore, so even as important and well-known this bill is to American families, they just don't care if he looks like an ogre.

Why does he hate American children?

Or are we going to let the 'Pukes go with this one because it is better for the Dems politically in the end?

If we have any ethics we will try to figure any and every way we can override this veto (which may well mean compromising with some 'Pukes in ways that leave a bitter taste).
