UPIWASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Pentagon officials say a Chinese company with former ties to the Iraqi army under Saddam Hussein and the Taliban may gain access to U.S. defense technology.
A proposed merger of Huawei Technologies, which also has ties to Beijing's military, and Bain Capital Partners LLC, the Massachusetts-based 3Com network-equipment manufacturer, would give the Chinese company access to the Pentagon's defense-network technology, The Washington Times reported Wednesday.
Huawei, which has also been linked to the U.N. oil-for-food scandal, was founded by a Chinese military officer in 1988 to manufacture military communications networks.
"Huawei is up to its eyeballs with the Chinese military," a defense official critical of the deal said.
