WHO: Cholera Outbreak in Iraq Spreads

Thursday October 4, 2007 2:16 AM

GENEVA (AP) - The toll of people in Iraq infected with cholera has risen to 3,315, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

The number of confirmed infections compares with 2,758 cases reported Sunday by the U.N. health agency. The death toll of 14 has been unchanged in recent days, WHO said.

The outbreak first detected Aug. 14 in Kirkuk in northern Iraq has now spread to half of the country's 18 provinces.

``The case-fatality rate has remained low throughout the outbreak indicating that those who have become sick have been able to access adequate treatment on time,'' WHO said.

2. Clean drinking water would have prevented this from happening.
While I'm glad they're now passing out the tablets to disinfect the water. I want to know why they didn't do that in the first place when they prevented the chlorine trucks from delivering shipments earmarked for water treatment?

4. Were those Tanker trucks you talk about? Tankers were used to make the biggest Truck bombing in the
Kurds territory! What was the final toll anyway over 600? Now the water is not getting chlorinated is that due to increased security after the tanker bombings?

This is such a despicable war every time they say they are fixing things and they show the world what they did it it invites an attack there like the Sheik that was murdered hours before the president talked about him in his speech last month! The whole thing stinks and we need to get the hell out of there!

7. That's the reason
The transport of chlorine was stopped due to the bombing. Which makes sense, except they didn't provide any alternative ways to disinfect the water. They finally are now since people have become sick.

This war is a humanitarian disaster. The people in power are so focused on their own goals that they keep overlooking the fact that there are millions of innocent people suffering from their actions.
