SANTIAGO, Chile -- A judge on Thursday indicted the widow and five children of former dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet on corruption charges stemming from an investigation into money laundering at the former Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C.
In total, Judge Carlos Cerda ordered the detention of 23 relatives, former military officials and other associates of Pinochet on ''strong indications that they had misused state funds'' during the 1973-90 dictatorship.
Sergio Laurenti, director of Amnesty International Chile, said the indictments suggested Pinochet's crimes would not be forgotten following his death in December 2006.
''The late Gen. Pinochet died without facing a court of justice, but the long arm of justice still has the challenge of several military and civil officers that remain free,'' he said. ``The arrest of retired military officers and some of the closest relatives of Pinochet for responsibility in the misuse of public funds discovered in the Riggs accounts is a step in the right direction.''
Pinochet's widow, Lucía Hiriart, requested that she be held at a military hospital in Santiago because of health concerns, but Pinochet's adult children -- Augusto, Lucía, Marco Antonio, Verónica and Jacqueline -- were detained Thursday.
Also detained were four retired army generals, Pinochet's former secretary, Mónica Ananias, and one of his former attorneys, Ambrosio Rodríguez.
