Boy Scouts badge voluntarily recalled for lead
Source: MSNBC/AP

A common badge awarded to young Boy Scouts is being recalled amid concerns of dangerous levels of lead.

As many as 1.6 million badges may be affected by the voluntary recall.

Boy Scouts of America spokesman Gregg Shields says a supply of plastic totem badges, usually given to Cub Scouts between the ages of 7 and 8, contained unacceptable amounts of lead during product testing.

-----

Shields say the badges are supplied by Georgia-based Kahoot Products and made in China. Kahoot is calling for a voluntary recall of the badge and asking parents to take them away from their children.

and i remember being a girl scout, those badges were "it". Can you imagine taking away 1.6 million badges from little boys?
Maybe these recalls are a good thing. people will wake up and see that we don't produce anything here anymore....

4. I have a hard time trying to peg just what the saddest facet of this story is.
Is it that children might ingest too much lead?

Is it that the Boy Scouts buy cheap plastic Chinese shit?

Is it that the cheap plastic Chinese shit is cheaper to make 7,000 miles away and then ship and distribute back to the States than to simply make it here?

Or maybe it's that there are probably hundreds of thousands of similarly toxic badges floating around that were never tested, and probably hundreds of thousands more that won't be in the future because we just don't learn?

Whatever it is, I don't know whether to :eyes: or  or  or some combination thereof.

5. They should make their own badges
Then they could get a badge in badge-making.

8. But then it wouldn't be long
before badge-making was deemed to be a low status badge, and then nobody wanted that badge, and then they outsourced badge-making. To Chinese Boy Scouts.

12. I remember that the "tote and chip" badge was a low status badge, but very coveted.

Without it, one was not permitted to use a knife or axe.

To this day I hand a knife to someone by carefully holding the blade, offering the handle, and not letting go until they either say "thank you" (if they're wise to the scheme) or till they've pulled it from me (ignorant bastards!)

6. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous
The only way these could be a problem is if the boys were eating the badges like they were potato chips.
