DiFatta twice detained in lewd conduct in restrooms (NOLA metro area)

St. Bernard Parish Councilman Joey DiFatta, who on Thursday withdrew from the 1st Senate District campaign, has been stopped twice since 1996 for suspicion of engaging in lewd behavior in public restrooms in Jefferson Parish, records obtained by The Times-Picayune show.

DiFatta, 53, acknowledged that reports he had been stopped are true, but he denied any wrongdoing in both cases. He said he was not prosecuted in either case and has no arrest record.

"If I had done something wrong, I would have been arrested," DiFatta said Thursday afternoon. "I was not. I will deny that I was involved in any activity of that nature."

Oh, and I once knew a municipal judge who was fairly addicted to Interstate highway rest stops and the truckers who could be found there. Yeah, he got caught. Lost everything, all at once. Hell, people knew he was gay, married, closeted, drinking too much. What did him in was the complete mindlessness and poor judgement of being caught, passed out at the wheel of his car at the rest area, with a tasty morsel of 17 year old chicken, naked in the backseat and passed out as well.

I think that is the issue for me, too. Public servants in important positions are supposed to show good judgement and requisite amounts of that old favorite, probity. Getting caught in a tearoom, rest area, the trucks, a park, or some other similar place evinces a recklessness that is unsettling.

The judge today? Well, he is no longer a judge. He runs an antique store. Bless his heart, I hope he has found some peace. He really wasn't a bad guy at all. He was always very kind to me and my parents. Always a gentleman.

Why is this slander coming out at this time when it was back in 2000 that the so called report was made at Lakeside? Did the reporter forget to show the date? Why was this not made up sooner when this genuine hero was beating drums, kicking ass and calling out those accountable for weak and poorly constructed levees then partitioning for some state and federal accountability as desperately necessary to pick up the pieces in St. Bernard. I question whether there are other mistaken reports made on other individuals. I question those who he is calling out and making accountable: Why have you not mentioned this sooner, and where were you when this man was getting help for the live ones in the midst of bodies floating in the Parish? When the hero who saved you and your family from drowning, gets accused, I hope you weigh similar facts and attempt his rescue when people slander him! - Or maybe you'd rather him in jail so that in the next storm, you can wait for Nagin and the feds to rescue you and you mother.
