Scandal brewing at Oral Roberts U.

By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS Associated Press Writer
© 2007 The Associated Press

TULSA, Okla. — Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts' university, or else he would be "called home."

Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal.

Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors' expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter's senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as "underage males."

2. Yay!!!! more details-----
It details dozens of alleged instances of misconduct. Among them:

_ A longtime maintenance employee was fired so that an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts could have his position.

_ Mrs. Roberts frequently had cell-phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to "underage males who had been provided phones at university expense."

_ The university jet was used to take one daughter and several friends on a senior trip to Orlando, Fla., and the Bahamas. The $29,411 trip was billed to the ministry as an "evangelistic function of the president."

_ Mrs. Roberts spent more than $39,000 at one Chico's clothing store alone in less than a year, and had other accounts in Texas and California. She also repeatedly said, "As long as I wear it once on TV, we can charge it off." The document cites inconsistencies in clothing purchases and actual usage on TV.

_ Mrs. Roberts was given a white Lexus SUV and a red Mercedes convertible by ministry donors.

_ University and ministry employees are regularly summoned to the Roberts' home to do the daughters' homework.

_ The university and ministry maintain a stable of horses for exclusive use by the Roberts' children.

_ The Roberts' home has been remodeled 11 times in the past 14 years.

179. It's no wonder we are at where we are today...
Look at what we watched during the 1950s, 1960s, & 1970s...

Just a sample off the top of my head
1950s
"Father Knows Best"
"Ozzie and Harriet"
"Leave It to Beaver" (my personal favorite)

1960s
"F Troop"
"Munsters"
"Gilligan's Island"
"Adams Family"
"My Mother the Car"
"Me and the Chimp"
"Beverly Hillbillies"
"Camp Runamuck"
"Hank"
"Hogan's Heroes"
"Flying Nun"

1970s
...pick your "favorite" 1970s program; I stopped watching TeeVee about then, but I do remember some stupid, grating half-hour sitcoms.

And don't forget the one-hour crime dramas when a suspect's "rights" got in the way of a "righteous bust." I remember show after show when we would be witness to a crime being committed, then due to a "technicality," the perp got off--albeit only until the last few minutes of the show when he was finally captured. But the whole time the cops would be saying sarcastically "We would have got him off the streets, but his rights were violated! :eyes:

But let's face it, we watched a lot of crap during those decades...A LOT OF CRAP!!! A few good shows, but still...A LOT OF CRAP!!! It's no wonder we're a nation of ignorant couch-potatoes who grew complacent and allowed the likes of the "Reagan Revolution" to happen.

Watch the stuff today and one tends to cringe, knowing that was our entertainment then. And it dominated just about every American family's evening for several decades.

It's no wonder we are at where we are today...

13. I live little more than a mile away from ORU.
And let me tell you, something about this whole thing stinks.

Lindsay Roberts, Richard Roberts' wife, has TWO cars, a white Lexus SUV and a red Mercedes Convertible. I guess God told her she needed both of them. Her closet is over 2,000 square feet. Yes, her CLOSET. This is just a part of her huge bedroom suite that would make the fittings in one of Saddam's former palaces seem cheap in comparison.

The Roberts' (Richard and Lindsay) live in a gated compound near ORU, and aren't hurting for anything. Meanwhile, the university is decaying. Buildings need to be painted, trees are dying, and a lot of maintenance has been deferred.

Here are some photos of the university, which looks like something straight out of The Jetsons: http://www.flickr.com/photos/losttulsa/sets/72057594062472318/

63. I visited some relatives in Tulsa a few years ago.
They drove us around on a sightseeing excursion of local places of interest, including ORU. I recall the giant praying hands, not too far from a security gate (hope I'm recalling this correctly) that prevented us from cruising the campus. For some reason it was a rather spirit-disturbing experience. Hard to explain as I look back on it. Also recall that Richard's first wife wrote a book about her experiences in "the family" and had some not-so-flattering things to share. Disgusting about Richard and Lindsay's lifestyle. They really should be ashamed but I'm guessing they're not.

My spouse still talks about the time an Oral Roberts crusade (complete with healing and lots of offering plates) came to town, and he (spouse) went to the basement of the building the event took place and swears all the "to-be-healeds" were milling around waiting for the big moment to roll out in wheelchairs, whatever, so Oral could lay hands upon them and---yep, they'd BE HEALED!

I'll look at the photos you posted, but for some reason I'm thinking they're going to disturb me similar to when I was actually there.

Best to you.

178. Oral Roberts tried to heal my dad
It's true. My grandparents, who were holy roller types, took my dad when he was a boy to a tent revival type meeting with Oral Roberts. My dad lost the sight in his left eye when he was 8 and fooling around with one of those roller blinds, which retracted and injured his eye.

Anyway, they take him to see Oral Roberts. Roberts did his whole laying on of hands thing and praised Jebus and such.

The result, according to my dad: "I got a headache."

How long does it take before so many tiles fall off their steps, and get kicked around, before it started looking like this? Good grief. Their eternal "Flame of Hope" died long ago.

Even some people who worked at ORU or 'City of Faith' made jokes about the place. Here's a good one:

One day, due to the ground settling, the 'Praying Hands' came apart. ORU officials called in a contractor to fix it. He walked up to the statue, took out his wallet, and tossed a dollar bill between the hands. They came together with a mighty clap.

Maybe that should be Mrs. Robertson. Sounds like Mrs. Robertson Roberts is into some kinkiness involving young males.

This is nice too (and illegal):

"The allegations are contained in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by three former professors. They sued ORU and Roberts, alleging they were wrongfully dismissed after reporting the school's involvement in a local political race.

Richard Roberts, according to the suit, asked a professor in 2005 to use his students and university resources to aid a county commissioner's bid for Tulsa mayor. Such involvement would violate state and federal law because of the university's nonprofit status. Up to 50 students are alleged to have worked on the campaign."

35. San Antonio televangelist John Hagee, a member of the ORU board of regents,
said the university's executive board "is conducting a full and thorough investigation."

Being as "Dr"* John Hagee is a practitioner of "MY prosperity" Gospel (Give me 10% of what you earn and God will bless you with wealth), this is really rich.

* No earned doctorate, but he uses it anyway to help sell books and promote himself. Actually most real Ph.D.s don't use "Dr." in front of their name except in a formal academic setting - they think the title should be reserved for MDs.

53. More on Hagee from Wikipedia.
Personal Beliefs
Hagee has denounced replacement theology, believing that Romans 9, 10 and 11 teaches that Jews continue to have favor with God by the election of grace without necessarily believing in Jesus. Mr. Hagee believes that the Bible commands Christians to be supportive of Israel and the Jewish people.

He often makes the claim that the land of Israel has never belonged to the Palestinian people. He cites the fact that the land was first called Palestine by the Romans, that there is no Palestinian language and that most Palestinians immigrated from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, and other Arab nations shortly before 1948.

Hagee has said that Iran is a threat to Western civilization and does not believe that the "Islamofascist" mentality will ever respond favorably to diplomacy. He supports an American-Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran to take out its nuclear capability and supports the Neo-Conservative movement in the United States.

Hagee's preaching is considered relatively traditional compared to some other televangelists. He asks his congregation to stand during the reading of the Biblical text prior to his sermon, and his style is often classified as "hellfire and brimstone". Hagee, like some other evangelical ministers, condemns literature such as J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, calling it contemporary witchcraft.

Hagee denounces abortion and stopped giving money to Israel's Hadassah hospital when they began performing abortions. He has also spoken out against homosexuality.

Hagee preaches that Russia and Islamic Nations are prophesied nations of the Antichrist, who will one day invade Israel. The Islamic Republic of Iran he cites as a shining example of how Islam is truly an enemy of Israel. In a discussion concerning Muhammad, he claims that Muhammad was a man of war and that this influence on Islam is the cause of the troubles of Jerusalem.

-----------------------
By the way, his books are everywhere.

But I continue to be charmed by the belief here at DU that if the zealot Christians would stop "supporting" Israel, the United States would be quite content to let the tiny nation be overrun by the surrounding large Arab populations and all its inhabitants murdered.

Letourneau, 43, and Vili Fualaau, 22, have been in the spotlight since she was imprisoned in 1997...

...The couple first met when Mr Fualaau was in the second grade. Their relationship became sexual when he was 12 and she was a 34-year-old married mother-of-four, a teacher at a suburban elementary school.
Mrs Letourneau was pregnant with Mr Fualaau's first child when she was arrested in 1997. She pleaded guilty to second-degree child rape and was sentenced to seven years in prison, with all but six months suspended.

Within weeks of her release, she was caught having sex with Mr Fualaau in her car and ordered to serve the remainder of her sentence. She gave birth to the couple's second daughter while serving time.

We used to watch those Oral Robert shows with the signing family. Richard was married to another woman at that time and I guess they must've been in their early 20s. 103. My Thoughts Exactly!
Geez, Chico's is expensive and cheap at the same time. Stretch velvet pants and strangely beaded tops. For this, little ol' ladies send money to them that they need to live?

Sometimes I think the French Revolutionaries had the right idea.

there were many times when i called the Oral Roberts Prayer Line and people prayed for my needs/requests/intentions ... I think Oral Roberts himself answered that prayer line one of those times ... it sounded very much like his voice to me... though i never asked his name and he never said who it was. i never sent them any donations but they were always open to listen to my requests and pray for me. for that I am thankful. they were a comfort and a help in my times of need.

149. What a pugnacious remark, "We live in a litigious society" ...
according to God. This man is completely delusional, his spiritual superiorly has no limits.

At a chapel service this week on the 5,300-student campus known for its 60-foot-tall bronze sculpture of praying hands, Roberts said God told him: "We live in a litigious society. Anyone can get mad and file a lawsuit against another person whether they have a legitimate case or not. This lawsuit ... is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion."

San Antonio televangelist John Hagee, a member of the ORU board of regents, said the university's executive board "is conducting a full and thorough investigation."

150. You know...
I am a believer...and I do believe one day I'll have a whole lot of shit to account for...that being said, if these people call themselves "Christians" they should be terrified of their future. How did the faith turn into this? And more importantly, how did they get so many people to believe this is the way? As a Christian I have no problem with the ridicule these people receive as their stance is directly opposed to the teachings of Jesus...and that concludes Stumpy's rant for the weekend. :eyes:

153. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation
Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
-Luke 6:24-26

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't serve both God and Mammon
-Matthew 6:24

But our country has proven again and again, you can fool some people ALL the time.

154. The hypocrisy and immorality here reminds me of the bush administration.
"We have asked and asked and asked to see the finances of our school and what they're doing with our money, and we've been told no," said Cross, who is majoring in government. "Now we know why. As a student, I'm not going to stand for it any longer."

Sounds like Congress demanding documents from the White House, except of course that Congress will apparently continue to "stand for it" indefinitely.

176. Tom Delay: "The Second Coming is What I Live For"
Tom Delay: "The Second Coming is What I Live For"
Max: How much of an inspiration is the Second Coming in your support for israel?

Tom Delay: Obviously, it's what I live for - I wish it comes tomorrow.

___________
This, coming from the former, long time speaker of the house - who many called the most powerful man in America after the president.

America is f*cked.

"I have covered the Christian right intensely for over four years. During this time, I attended dozens of Christian right conferences, regularly monitored movement publications and radio shows, and interviewed scores of its key leaders. I have never witnessed any spectacle as politically extreme, outrageous, or bizarre as the one Christians United for Israel produced last week in Washington. See for yourself."

-- Max Blumenthal

In this video clip alone, I saw Tom Delay, Joe Lieberman, and Rick Santorum.

How many others from Congress were there???

You have to watch the whole clip to truly appreciate how loopy these people are.

America is going to hell in a handbasket

Cuz I sit and laff my ass off at Dick and Linds. Lindsay always looks like she's "on" something -- stares blankly at Richard, with her hair all messed up ... looks like she's listing off her chair.
