Hoyer Calls Bush Veto of Child Health Bill a `Defining Moment'
Source: Bloomberg

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that President George W. Bush's veto this week of a $35 billion measure expanding a children's health insurance program is a ``defining moment'' in this session of Congress.

Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, said his party will spend coming days working to pressure more Republicans to help create a bipartisan coalition large enough to override Bush's veto. In the Senate, there already appear to be enough votes to do so.

``In the days ahead, we will work to persuade many of our Republican colleagues, who insist on standing with the president, to instead join the bipartisan majorities in Congress, and America's children, in overriding this veto,'' Hoyer said today in the Democratic Party's weekly radio address.

(snip)
Hoyer said that Bush's veto is ``contrary to the will of the American people'' and that the president has made some misleading claims during the debate.

1. Steny's eyes slowly open. Blinking in the light he hears the echo of Bush's
words fading away.

"Hoyer said that Bush's veto is ``contrary to the will of the American people'' and that the president has made some misleading claims during the debate."

Where ya been the last 7 years Steny. We have been takin it for 7 years. Lies? Ha ha ha. This is mere overstatement by the boy king. Contrary to our will!!?? Come fruggin on. They have been shafting us for 7 years. And you have been there every minute. Why has it taken this long for you to call him on it?

Come on Sten. He is just giving cover to the congressional pukes who you are too weak to stand up to.

Not buyin.

reason. everything costs too much, why use that lame excuse on something to protect our children?

5. The reason given...
...is that the bill is an expansion of middle class entitlements and moves us close to socialized health care. Cost was not given as a reason. Also, it is initially funded by a regressive tax that disproportionately hits lower income people (cigarette tax).

Here is one point of view on this position. I'm sure there are others.

7. The real reason: George Bush hates (poor) children. and he hates
the poor. If Katrina wasn't evidence enough, then surely this is.

11. Spending billions of dollars (and thousands of lives) on a war
of choice is one thing.

Spending money to insure children get adequate medical care????? Isn't that what trust funds are for?

6. George Bush hates (poor) children. Every one on DU should start
repeating that every chance we get. Let's frame this "Hoover moment"!

8. If the Dems can achieve an override, it would go a long way to restore their image.
Please, do it for the young people.

9. Kucinich damn well better vote YES this time
Why the hell was Kucinich one of the Dems voting against this bill? Not that I would stand in his corner in our caucus in February (because of his past anti-choice record) but why in hell would someone purporting to run for President vote against health care for poor children?

10. Kucinich voted against it because children of illegal aliens were not covered.
Making the perfect the enemy of the good. Dems could have corrected the problem later. Stupid move by Kucinich.
