Petraeus: Iran still fueling war
Source: CNN

From CNN's Jim Clancy

FORWARD OPERATING BASE CALDWELL, Iraq (CNN) -- Although America's top general in Iraq called al Qaeda "the wolf closest to the sled," he said sectarian fighting among militias fueled by Iran could be the biggest long-term challenge for Iraq.

Gen. David Petraeus, in an interview with CNN's Jim Clancy near the Iranian border in Diyala province, said, "Militias could potentially be the long-term problem for Iraq, if you assume that we can continue to make progress against al Qaeda," Petraeus said.

He said he is in a "show-me mode," waiting to see if Iran honors a pledge to stop the flow of arms, money and training from Iran into Iraq that has helped both Shiite and Sunni militants.

"Al Qaeda remains the wolf closest to the sled, if you will. The enemy that is always bent on reigniting sectarian violence, causing the most horrific casualties, damaging the infrastructure in the most difficult way. So you cannot lose focus on al Qaeda."

But, Petraeus added, there was "no question" that Iranian arms were ending up in the hands of the Iraqi militias and there was "no debate" that six Iranians detained by the U.S. military in northern Iraq are Iranian Quds force members, the Iranian unit accused by the United States of training and arming insurgents....

1. Hey General Peaches? Do you think it might have something to do with IRAN bordering Iraq?!?
If Canada was being occupied by Russia, don'tcha think we'd be sending support to our buds leading "the Resistance" to the north? It would be ... Neighborly? :eyes:

I'm sick of this vapid rhetoric.

12. Somebody needs to tell the stooge Betrayus, that he and the Criminal Bush...
are fueling the war in Iraq. This criminal, clown is complicit
with the treason and war crimes of Bush. Does that not make
Betrayus a traitor and war criminal too?

3. "Let slip the dogs of war," falling from many lips in DC these days.
Actually a way of distracting us from lack of Iraqi progress in terms of building a government OR an army/police force.

In fact, the surge has only worked 1 month in the last 7 in terms of casualty rates:

So if we can blame our failure on Iran and do our bombing, all can roll on as before.

15. You can't handle the truth!
Sorry, channeled Jack Nicholson for a moment there :) hehe
Anyway all joking aside I have to agree that the General needs to provide proof.
I still don't believe his report either on the surge mainly because he had an interest in saying what the president wanted because he was appointed by the president and reports directly to him.
If Bush wanted the american people to really believe if the surge had worked he should have appointed a panel of randomly picked retired generals to investigate and report but as it is I suspect the reason he did not was because he wanted a report that would rally the core war supporters.

9. Republicans.....they backed the dems down on criticizing him
Now they use "the General" to support their propaganda so the dems won't go after his lies again...of course the press will support the republicans,as usual. They won't let those mean old dems go after him again. And then republicans have a voice right out there hawking war on Iran.

11. Petraeus determines war with Iran is key to presidential hopes
if you read between the lines...having openly stated that has ambitions toward the white house, it is hard not to see that he is engineering perspectives toward that possibility.

17. Iran helping Sunni militants!? WTF?
"...that has helped both Shiite and Sunni militants." I can't wait to hear how the Misadministration addresses this latest enigma. And then there's the other inconvenient matter of our Sunni "allies" and the flow of money, arms, etc. from their countries into Iraq.

19. We are going to attack Iran after the first of the year. All this is just the lead-up.
It is unimportant to debate the words; the decision was made long ago. Anybody remember 2002 around here? It's all semantics. The U.S. will attack Iran. Mario Cuomo in a column this weekend had it right: The Constitution provides that the Congress has the power to declare war. Period. But, the Congress in 2002 - in maybe the worst vote in its history - gave Bush the power to attack Iraq, which he did, without a declaration of war.

The same thing will happen again, except I believe that Bush will attack Iran as an outgrowth of that 2002 resolution, and won't ask for any further authority. We are months from disaster, and the end of the U.S. as we have known it, for all our faults.

21. US accuses Iran's envoy to Iraq
Source: BBC

Gen David Petraeus
The top US military commander in Iraq, Gen David Petraeus, has accused Iran's ambassador of belonging to an elite unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

Gen Petraeus said Hassan Kazemi-Qomi was a member of the Quds Force, which the US believes backs foreign Islamic revolutionary movements.

Gen Petraeus said he had no doubt Iran was behind attacks that had led to the deaths of US soldiers.

Iran has so far not commented, but regularly denies any such involvement.

27. Betrayus will say whatever Der Furher tells him to say
If Bush tells Betrayus to find proof of Iranian involvement, that's what he'll do. If Betrayus had been in charge of the initial invasion, no doubt he would have "found" the missing WMD's.
