Uranium Killed 37 Italian Soldiers
Source: Corriere (Italy)

Defence minister Parisi tells Senate commission of inquiry. Data from ten years of missions abroad reveal 225 have contracted tumours. Observatory says number of victims is much higher.

ROME – A total of 255 Italian troops have contracted tumours in missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and the Balkans over the ten years from 1996 to 2006. Thirty-seven, or 14.5%, have died. The information came in a statement made by the defence minister, Arturo Parisi, to the Senate commission of inquiry into depleted uranium. In the same period, 1,427 troops not involved in missions abroad also contracted tumours.

THE FIGURES - One hundred and sixty-one of the 255 troops who contracted tumours were serving with the army, forty-seven with the navy, twenty-six with the air force and twenty-one were carabinieri. Twenty-nine of the dead were in the army, one was in the air force and seven were carabinieri. “The general directorate of military health cannot at this time establish how many of the troops not involved in missions abroad served on firing ranges in Italy”, added Mr Parisi. The defence minister also said that “the issue is not covered by state secrecy” but “several factors have so far made it impossible to acquire a solid basis of information. These figures come from data collected by the national health service and may be adjusted by a one or two units after further verification of clinical data and personnel records”. To acquire a complete picture, data being collected from the now abolished recruiting offices will also be considered. “Nevertheless, cases of soldiers discharged years ago who did not apply for military service to be recognised as the cause will be excluded. This means that their illness may only be known to the national, but not the military, health service”.

1. Shoddy journalism
How to begin -

"A total of 255 Italian troops have contracted tumours in missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and the Balkans over the ten years from 1996 to 2006."

How many soldiers were involved? What is the normal tumour rate and what would that predict for this group over 10 years?

"In the same period, 1,427 troops not involved in missions abroad also contracted tumours."

Is there a difference in the tumor rate between these two groups? Is there a difference in the age profile of these two groups? Back to the first quote - was there a difference in the tumor occurance rate between Iraq (lots of DU ammo used) and the Balkans or Afghanistan (no DU ammo used)?

But wait - no need to ask questions! Just read the headline - "Uranium Killed 37 Italian Soldiers"

I could have just as easily written "God Angry NATO Fought Serbs - Strikes Down 37 Italian Soldiers" or "Serving Abroad Means Less Tumours". Shoddy journalism.

4. Poor translation...
...has nothing to do with the poor quality of the reporting.

Good reporting provides enough information for the reader to determine if there is a story or not. If the tumor rate is troops overseas is the same as troops at home, what kind of a story is it? We are given no information by which we can decide if the data really mean something is amiss.

6. I'll say. Unless the translator deleted a bunch of parts from the report, this is shoddy at best. NT

3. share Depleted Uranium info with your loved ones.

Share this with everyone you know who was in Iraq, especially those who where in tanks, or near them.
Besides tumors, they might have blood clots, respiratory problems.. etc.

8. that 255 Italian troops contracted tumors in missions in Iraq
Afghanistan Lebanon and Balkans over 10 years 1996-2006

shows that Depleted Uranium has a trail of cancer and illness

161 serving in the army airforce and carabini and navy

the fascinating thing to me is look at the navy its the highest

thats interesting

Depleted Uranium kills your army as well as your enemy
Its a useless weapon because it poisons everything

9. Actually...
there is no evidence in the article to support your statement. In fact, that the NAVY reported 47 tumors raises the question "How much DU is floating in the oceans?" answer -"0". Navy personel would not be exposed unless they had extensive shore duty, so a good bet is that the 47 tumors represents a background rate. So how many Navy guys were overseas and how many Army guys were overseas? How does the actual rate of incidence (# of cases per 1,000 people per year) compare? We are given no clue, therefore it is impossible to draw any conclusion based on evidence.

As I said earlier, shoddy journalism.
