Stop embryonic cell research, Pope urges

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict appealed to scientists on Thursday to stop using human embryos in stem cell research, saying it violated the dignity of human life.

The Vatican supports stem cell research so long as it does not harm embryos, which the Catholic Church argues are humans from the moment of conception.

"The destruction of human embryos, whether to acquire stem cells or for any other purpose, contradicts the purported intent of researchers, legislators and public health officials to promote human welfare," the Pontiff wrote in a letter to South Korea's new ambassador to the Holy See.

The Church supports research on adult cells and promising alternatives to embryonic research, such as the use of amniotic fluid protecting fetuses in the uterus.

3. Amen
And let me add, stop shuffling around the pedophile Priests to other parishes and call the cops on them instead and stop using accounting tricks to hide church assets when sued by victims. Until then any moral high ground claimed by the church is an illusion.

19. Oh, but their concerns are about "human life" in the abstract.
Molested children are just not abstract at all, so there is no concern.

7. I would like to see the Pope clearly define the moment of conception.
Moment, wouldn't that have to be some sort of split second up to a few seconds?

Until it is clearly defined by the Pope, I would rest on the scientifically-proven argument that there is no such thing as "the moment of conception".

20. Oh, but a unique human person, with an immortal soul, exists from the moment of conception.;
Which is why identical twins always include an 'evil twin' -- the one without a soul. ;-)

I always worry about the chimeras, where more than one fertilized egg combined: how do they deal with having two or more souls?

21. That's rule number one.
Rule number two is: even if you put your own house in order, don't go telling society what to do.

11. Tsunami of
biological advances. There is nothing moral leadership can do to "ban" a wave like this that far outreaches the single concern about stem cell research. The real work in fact is that the makers, producers and planners not be greed gods or the military industrial complex, that mankind look at its moral base and goals for the future of life on this planet. That not only is the most important way it is the only way to navigate the unimaginable steps coming along. The production of artificial DNA, already, is as clearcut as it is beyond the old moral microscope. A banning power strategy that plays to the RW players need for red flag controls over the population will do exactly the opposite of moral intent, empowering the worst people with the worst judgment to guide the technological evolutionary juggernaut. At best, the complex contradictions will sow misery and harm and damage all along the way until a crisis point is blundered into(like global warming and the population crisis).

It is a predictable and consistent papal stance. I think it does so little to effect anything good at all about the real situation as to blind people to just about every part of the critical changes in life that are and will be effecting us in totally unknowable ways. The only way to approach this is to deal with what we know, which would not call for an end to any of the papal views so much as to work with the human ethic itself. Children playing with matches is all that the current unimaginative, limited no-no strategy
guarantees and it only insures that the leaders it favors will become the most dangerous of these endangered children. Prohibition type laws are all man-made brainstorms. The only thing Jesus wanted to ban was among his followers, violence, hatred, hypocrisy and selfishness. Do that and society can work out its problems and ethics. If the world rejects the Christian concerns or compassionate ethics, Christians won't have any effect on the laws for the society anyway. Its easy to be against a medical technique. Ban war and call on Christians to lay down arms worldwide. Then the majority would pay attention for a change, at least.
