"No Nukes" Stars Reunite to Fight Nuclear Power

Published: October 11, 2007

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Nearly three decades after they banded together for a series of "No Nukes" concerts that yielded an album and movie, musicians Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Graham Nash have revived their protest of nuclear power.

No new concerts are planned, but the three reunited in a new YouTube video released on Thursday and are spearheading a signature drive to petition U.S. senators to kill a plan to give about $50 billion in loan guarantees to the nuclear power industry, Raitt said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

The three Baby Boomers, along with Keb' Mo' and Ben Harper, on Thursday issued a remake of the 1960s protest song, "For What It's Worth." The song is known for its line, "Stop, children. What's that Sound? Everybody look what's going down."

Raitt said nuclear power protests have ebbed since she and others including Bruce Springsteen headlined the "No Nukes" concerts in 1979 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is expecting 17 companies to file to build about 31 new reactors in the next two years. There are 104 operating U.S. reactors now....

3. interesting...
and how are these fools powering their homes...or what source of energy is providing the power for the concert? i bet it's not renewable.

nuclear energy is one of the safest forms of energy per unit energy produced. that includes renewables. look it up.

but, these yahoos want to stop nuclear power plants. then we get what, more coal power plants? that's EXACTLY what happened in Germany. That's EXACTLY what happened in the US. That's EXACTLY what happens any time you take away nuclear, even with the fine alternatives we currently have. fuck that.

why aren't they putting on concerts to protest coal powered plants? they not only kill people directly (30,000 a year in the US alone), they contribute to GW. not only that, china mines coal plant waste for radioactive material. mercury is transported across the globe. acid rain is still a threat (you can get sulfur out, but NOxs are still a problem). the only plus to burning coal is the global dimming effect. i guess that's what they're hoping for?

btw, how many people die in the US every year from nuclear energy?

4. "What's that sound?"
I dunno, people choking on the coal we've been force fed as the only alternative to decades of people like this creating an environment where cleaner nuclear power was made impossible? That's what I hear.

6. Count Me Out!

I was one of those people who was partially swayed by the very earnest, but in my opinion very wrong-headed, protests against nuclear power the last time around. I'm not getting behind the anti-nuclear activist bandwagon again.

What has happened since then? I wised up to acid rain, massive ecological devastation from coal mining, mercury contamination of our waterways and our fisheries, the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by coal mining, fossil fuel consumption, and the wars for control of foreign oil fields, and most important of all, the increasingly run-away effects of man-made global warming caused by carbon-cyle power generation.

As to Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and Graham Nash, I still admire you, I still like your music, I wish you all well, but you're wrong. There are things that are worse, much worse, than nuclear power plants.

8. No polar bears will be invited to this party.
They are hungry and would probably eat the guests. There would be some justice in that.
