Bush talks trade in Miami appearance

President Bush, giving a major trade speech in Miami Friday, urged Congress to pass free trade agreements with Peru, Panama and Colombia, and also Korea.

''Now is the time to move forward with these pro-growth, pro-democracy agreements,'' Bush said during a speech at the Radisson Hotel in Miami before about 550 members of the local business and trade community.

The president has encountered congressional resistance to his free trade agenda but said, ``Congress should pass these agreements soon.''

Speaking before a friendly, by-invitation-only audience, Bush said, ``I think the case for trade is unmistakable for Miami. We need to make that point all over the country.''

First he trades Sammy Sosa, now he wants to trade Miami!

What's he got against Hispanics?

Ah yes. Because free trade is synonymous with democracy and peace. Did Bush even mention the problems with the Peru deal (Chamber of Commerce saying labor requirements are un-enforceable), or the Colombia deal (union leaders being targetted and killed by people related to the Colombian government).

Cue Pinochet's Chile, Argentina, and post-Paul Bremer Iraq (wherein Bremer passed a free trade law)

Really, the Chicago-ists need a new talking point.
