Commander Wants 40,000 GIs in Europe to Deal With 'Resurgent Russia'
Source: Stars & Stripes

ARLINGTON, Va. — A “resurgent Russia” is one more reason the Army should keep 40,000 soldiers in Europe, rather than cut to 24,000 as planned, the commander of United States Army Europe, Gen. David McKiernan, said Thursday.

“There are potentially dangerous places and conditions in the European area of responsibility,” said McKiernan, who is also commander of the U.S. 7th Army. “We don’t know what’s going to happen, in terms of a resurgent Russia.”

McKiernan told reporters in Washington that U.S. military commanders are monitoring Russia for indications that its military is once again on the rise.

“We keep an eye on certain indicators, some of which we’ve seen already,” such as a resumption of long-range reconnaissance flights, “arms sales to nation- states that has differences with,” and indications that Russia is becoming involved with border conflicts in Georgia and Azerbaijan, he said.

“I think what would be troublesome would be overt military actions outside of Russia to influence things,” McKiernan said. “We have to keep an eye on this and see how it plays out.”

14. It would be a nice little gift to his girlfriend - making her relevant again.
Remember, contradicta's claim to fame before all of this was being this "highly-regarded" Sovietologist. She was a Cold War expert. Wrote the books, chaired the seminars, delivered the speeches, and that's where she made her mark and attracted the attention of the high and mighty of the time. In a post-Cold War world, she knows nothing about anything, her area of expertise no longer existent, her specialty obsolete. If we start another Cold War with Russia, she'll be back in familiar territory again.

Nice of him, don't you think? Making that grandiose a gesture to her, reversing so much history and so much progress and so much geopolitical evolution so contradicta can get back to exploiting her "specialty" again. Resurrecting the frickin' Cold War from the GRAVE, just for her! Ahhh... such is love...

And that new Russian bomb makes me VERY nervous. The polar ice cap has melted and they're next door on a sunny day.

George saw his soul and Putin saw a ninny.. we are week at this point , both militarily and economically. I had a good conversation with my son today about how if we invade Iran, our country will collapse in the next ten years. How could anyone screw this country up soooo bad in 7 yrs.?

4. what -has- that dude been drinking?
Russia has no reason to "invade" Europe. Why would Russia want to kill off their hard-currency nat-gas customers? They have it made right now, and probably are getting paid in Euros.

7. Isn't that just precious!
"...that U.S. military commanders are monitoring Russia for indications that its military is once again on the rise."

Intelligence, provided by an operative codenamed "Spitball", has indicated that Iraqi WMDs were transferred to Russia prior to 2003. Satellite activity indicates substantial growth in suspicious activity in Russia and it will soon be reported in the NY Times that the Kremlin has operational ties with al Qaeda(as soon as the story can be planted).

It is expected that Colin Powell will be tapped to go before the UN to present this conclusive evidence of the threat posed to the world. :sarcasm:

Does anybody here think that leaving more troops in Europe is a subtle way of keeping the EU in line?

26. Nuclear cruise missiles would be a good choice
They are relatively small, and I would think they could slip in a few 1500 mile range, 200 kiloton missiles without much chance of being detected.

9. Let's replay the Cold War for Rummy + Cheney . . .
Chagrined that JFK ended the Cold War . . .
the "warriors" Rummy & Cheney set out to keep the myth of the Cold War alive and to recreate it when possible -- resurrecting the MIIC -- and presumably sharing the wealth!!!

10. Isn't this in response to our insistence that we're building some sort of
military facility on their boarder or something? I don't think it's Russia attacking Europe, I think it's Russia doing something about that military base.

Everywhere Bush goes, he alienates and pisses off the powers that be. I am filled with rage.

hosting WW3 or sharing the same global balance of power perspective today. Really, Russia and every other country in the world investing more on defense? Gee, the largest military power in the world, invading and occupying sovereign countries based on bogus justifications as a pretext to steal their oil....this wouldn't be motivation for other countries to increase defense spending?

our boots from thier ground.
Let them stand on their own if they decide they need help from some made up boogy man.
besides, it only takes the threat of a few sea launched nuke missiles to end a war anyway. Russia knows it.
