Tense Moments After Boot Camp Acquittal

By MELISSA NELSON, Associated Press Writer

1:01 AM PDT, October 13, 2007

PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- Tensions ran high after eight former boot camp workers were acquitted of manslaughter in the death of a 14-year-old inmate who was videotaped being punched and kicked.

The case sparked outrage and spelled the end of Florida's system of juvenile boot camps, but it took a jury just 90 minutes Friday to decide that the death of Martin Lee Anderson was not a crime.

Anger over the verdict was obvious outside the courtroom, where bystanders screamed "murderer" at former guard Henry Dickens as he described his relief at the verdict.

"I am truly, truly sorry this happened. Myself, I love kids," said Dickens, 60. He said Anderson "wasn't beaten. Those techniques were taught to us and used for a purpose.".......

1. Lamentably, the techniques taught and allowed by security and police to render a perpetrator secure
can lead to death. The Repug "tough on crime" slogan has proven its efficiency. If we want a change in our society it's time to get every right wing repug out of office. It's time to build a culture where just treatment and civility is honored and respected - a culture that promotes life - and not Repug avengment.

If its true, then this is not a good omen.. YOu dont BEAT kids, even the criminals once. And to the age of 18 they are kids, with the opportunity to live "normal lifes".. You dont treath young adults even the criminal once, bad and beat them, as it locks like this guard have been doing.. I have some exerience with this type of problem, and you can manage to help them to behave, and be better adults when this time come, with other means..

But, it is maybee a reason you have 2,2 million americans in prision...

4. Sad but, just underlines the civil liability.

(Another thread just now had someone saying that the state had paid 5m to the family? If so, my post about civil suit possibilities may be mistaken and redundant, since a settlement would void any such suit.)

5. The family has settled
The civil case with both the county and the state was settled before the trial started for $4.7 million.
The locals were fired up and think the family should give the money back now. Or that Charlie Crist should refund it.

6. I don't think so. They were found not guilty like O.J. Simpson but we all know their behavior was
criminal.
