Source: BBC

By Ian Pannell
BBC News, Baghdad

A US serviceman who was in charge of the detention of ex-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has gone on trial by court martial accused of aiding the enemy.

Lt-Col William Steele is standing trial in Baghdad on a total of seven counts and could face a life sentence.

The Army doesn't fool around when they think you've been insufficiently abusive to the prisoners!

2. His only hope...
is to run right out and kill a few innocent Iraqi's. This at the end of the article caught my eye...
This is only the second time that a US serviceman has been accused of aiding the enemy.

After much publicity the suspect in the previous case was eventually cleared and given an honourable discharge.

3. I wonder what he found out that requires him to be locked away for life?
Just wondering maybe he knows where the skeletons are hiding after taking care of Saddam. Remember the story of how Shrub refused to let Saddam go into exile before the invasion!

4. Granted he probably shouldn't have given the Iraqis that cell phone...
but life sentence? Unless he broke Sadaam out of prison, which the world knows he didn't, I don't see this as a life-worthy offense. Granted, that video getting out probably damaged US image abroad, but isn't that like pissing in a swamp?
