Lieberman Lumps Democrat Rival Dean in with Bush
Lieberman Lumps Democrat Rival Dean in with Bush
Wed January 7, 2004 06:26 PM ET

By Andrew Clark

snip............

"We cannot replace one set of extremes with an extreme anger of our own," he told a campaign event in New Hampshire.

"I am not George Bush or Howard Dean," said Lieberman, who has built a record of working across the political aisle. "Both would take the country down the wrong path on many of the most important issues of our day."

snip............

"We Democrats who are running to replace George W. Bush also have a big choice to make," he said. "We can try to match him pound for polarizing pound. Or we can rescue our country from divisiveness, bring people together and move forward."

snip..........

"I don't think we should have to choose between a president who has made too many enemies around the world and a Democratic candidate who seems to act as if he doesn't understand that we have enemies around the world," he said.

41. What a Putz
If he'd been as tough on Bush when he had the chance he might be running for re-election right now instead of watching his political career come to an end.

So who is Desperate Joe going to support if the choice is Dean or Bush? Wait, I think I know the answer to that question. Joe, take a seat in the hall next to Zell.

8. Right now in Iowa and New Hampshire --
-- there are a whole lot of Democrats who consider themselves to the left of Joe Lieberman. A right-of-center Democrat is still left of Lieberman.

If the polls are even somewhat right, Lieberman is only representing (at best) 10%. It's probably more like 5% at this point.

I wonder if the people on his staff realize their good efforts are being eclipsed by at least 90% of Democratic voters, whose ideology is left or even way left of Lieberman's?

I don't know what constituency Lieberman's gunning for, but it may be that he walked into the wrong movie.

it could be, I suppose. I had't thought of that. I feel like I missed something now, but I just wish that Lieberman weren't so conservative. I appreciate the heads-up.

13. Help me here,
I support lots of our guys and girls running, but I cannot seem to get a grip (based upon what I see around here and in the press) on whether Dean is too liberal or not liberal enough. It seems like many here agree with Lieberman and say he is far to the left. Yet others equate him with Newt Gingrich because of his support in the past for certain policies. He's NRA and that is bad to many, yet he is too liberal.

Which is it?

20. It depends on which Howard Dean we're talking about
Are we talking about the Howard Dean that, as governor of Vermont, was regularly endorsed by the NRA and often found himself at odds with the more liberal elements in his state party?

Or are we talking about the Howard Dean who was "reborn" on the presidential campaign trail and has emerged as the darling of the internet-savvy left?

25. Reborn or born right the first time, better than Lieberman
After all, Joe now considers himself a Clinton Democrat:

But the truth is, after much reflection, my feelings of disappointment and anger have not dissipated. Except now these feelings have gone beyond my personal dismay to a larger, graver sense of loss for our country, a reckoning of the damage that the President's conduct has done to the proud legacy of his presidency, and ultimately an accounting of the impact of his actions on our democracy and its moral foundations.
Because the conduct the President has admitted to was so serious and his assumption of responsibility on August 17th so inadequate, the last three weeks have been dominated by a cacophony of media and political voices calling for impeachment, or resignation, or censure, while a lesser chorus implores us to "move on" and get this matter behind us.

11. Is there something particularly fascinating about Lieberman
that prompts you to start so many posts about him? Just curious....you don't seem to support him so why are you so interested in him? DU is certainly not very Joe-friendly so perhaps you just like to see if you can get a rise out of the troops?

14. Unless there is a new rule I'm unaware of
Dean supporters like to know who is attacking him whenever it happens, like the supporters of many canidates here. I read up on Dean and find more Lieberman info than most others...at least that hasn't been posted here yet. I post what interests me that I don't see up here on DU. Lieberman's attacks on Dean interest me, so I read such articles, and so on and so on.

Oh yeah, and I disagree with Lieberman's politics, as do many of us here. I don't think he's a DINO, but he's sure someone that I think is totally out-of-step with the mainstream of the Democratic Party.

I bet you thought I wouldn't admit that, huh?

32. OK, that makes sense
That's what I thought. It's funny that everyone piles on Lieberman for piling on to Dean, but I rarely see threads about Kerry, Gephardt et al who are equally piling on. It is an election and not a coronation, you know, and Lieberman is doing exactly what he is supposed to do.

Dean feels free to criticize the Democrats in Congress but his supporters want no criticism in return. I guess I don't really blame them, but I'm really worried about how well this is going to serve Dean if he is the nominee.

By the way, I have contributed to the Dean campaign. In fact, I got a recorded call from him last night asking for more $$. Right now, I doubt he would get my vote, however, as I have not been impressed with his readiness or his ability to appeal to Democrats who are more moderate.

I didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't start all the threads that you want, only to point out that I have noticed how many of them are negative threads on Lieberman. Just a point of interest. Obviously I don't share the animus towards Lieberman that is so evident at DU.

18. Is there one Joe fan on DU?
I was just wondering.. I have yet to see one post in his favor. Poor guy... Dean is like Bush, too far left? Helen Thomas was reported as saying recently that she's never seen such vile attacks on a fellow party candidate during a primary. How lovely... we've sunk to Newt/Rush lows... I'm so proud.

Joe needs to go. What demographic is he going for anyway? Just can't figure him out!

I am not saying this to be racist or anything, but I think he believes he has the Jewish vote in the bag and that will be enough of a base. He'll be playing the poor me victim soon.
