Granholm backs Clinton for president

Gordon Trowbridge / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Lt. Gov. John Cherry have endorsed Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Hillary Clinton's proposals and track record are evidence that she is clearly the candidate best prepared to lead the nation and be a champion for Michigan," the two said in a prepared statement released this afternoon making what had been a widely expected announcement.

The two Democrats will cite Clinton's advocacy for manufacturing jobs and tougher enforcement of trade rules, her support of universal healthcare and her backing for increased production of alternative fuels in the endorsement announcement, which is expected to go out later this afternoon.

Granholm had said on Oct. 10 that she would make an endorsement this week, and strongly hinted that Clinton would be her choice.

1. All the other candidates snubbed Michigan on account of Iowa and the DNC
Hillary kept her name on the ballot.

3. There goes Michigan if Clinton is the nominee ---
Granholm is HATED by Michiganders, even though the terrible economy is not her fault. Thanks to the Big Three automakers, she is blamed for all the ills.

The current modest good news such as the Labor contract and Toyota reliability lower ratings will not be in time to save her or any candidate she supports.

Even if there is some sort of turn around, she will never get any credit for her work to bring in other industry - ex. Google work to Ann Arbor -- because Pfizer left there due to their own mismanagement (defective products).

I am related to supposedly "moderate" Repugs and their comments about her are virulent and out of character even for them. Their charges are not logical in that they belong to the "white collar" retired GM group and blame Labor for GM troubles (false) and they now watch Faux and see taxation to repair the infrastructure and vital services as the enemy of all things American.

4. I'm a Michigander.....and I'm not sold on the "Granholm is hated by Michiganders" assertion
... and have you seen Republican approval ratings in Michigan? They're subarctic.

10. I'm not sold on that theory either
My repuke dentist voted for Jennifer because he thought (in his words) that DeVos was a idiot.

Yes there is some hatred directed her way but my belief is that is it by the far-right.

16. I agree.
the reps in Michigan have hated her from the start, that's not going to change no matter who sho throws her support behind. I don't see many Dems blaming her for the state of affairs.

18. Michigan Voted for Granholm by a Solid Margin
Dick DeVos, brother-in-law to Blackwater USA pwner Erik Prince lost to Granholm.

At my place of employment, its only the Republicans griping about Granholm - and yes they are extremely vicious.

But the GOP is just a bunch of cry-baby-loud-mouths who can't look in the mirror at themselves - let alone think for themselves.

My bet is Elfin is just surrounded by Right Wing crybaby's and its skewing his or her perception.

7. DeVos was a TERRIBLE presence on the campaign trail
despite the Amway moolah. His ads were also terrible.

She is very vulnerable according to friends who are major supporters of hers -- and they are considered "players" in the money and media game in the state.

Somehow I know such people - go figure - but I roomed with someone who married someone etc. etc. and still maintain the friendships via college there - U-M.

I do not live there now , but have many significant contacts who are very gloomy about the future if the Rethugs find a candidate who "seems" midstream and who has good advisors.

I donated $25 to her campaign and I must say, her holiday card was absolutely charming and I was impressed that such a lowly donor as I got it - though I wondered about how she was spending her money.

9. also the DeVos campaign
flooded the streets with campaign signs the night before election day. That really ticked off voters....my neighbors are nice repukes who didn't vote for the governor position because of it.

17. And Now We Know About DeVos Ties To Blackwater USA
His brother-in-law is Erik Prince, owner of Blackwater USA. Mr. Prince is brother to Dick's wife Betsy.

11. I don't know if hated is the right word.
Edited on Sat Oct-20-07 12:25 AM by D23MIURG23
But her popularity is definitely far from stratospheric.

Incidentally this whole episode has me livid. I have ONE Democrat to choose from in the primary, and its HRC?! And now Jennifer Granholm is endorsing her? This is total bullshit. I feel as though the whole party just took a giant dump on my entire state. Way to disinfranchise millions of people over the actions of our elected representatives, Democrats. You fucking morons.

 :grr:

13. The DNC should have never punished the Democratic voters in MI and FL
Instead, the DNC should have imposed sanctions on the superdelegates. I thought this mass punishment strategy was misguided and too blunt a strategy to preserve the idiotic system in which IA and NH always go first.

14. Yeah it is a rediculous idea.
More over, its probably the biggest liability the Democrats will have in the presidential election.

15. The deal in MI
Officially the MDP has not signed on for the primary, we are still slated for the caucus in February.

As to the candidates who withdrew from the MI ballot, this has much more to do with the bullying done by the "first states" than the DNC. The first states get the candidates to sign a pledge that says if any state moves their caucus/primary ahead of the self-appointed Chosen Ones the candidates will not be on the ballot of the offending state. If candidate does not withdraw name these states promise to make it much more difficult for that candidate to win those first states. Ve have vays......

Anyone who can fog a mirror understands how valuable it is to get that momentum from winning the first states. I mean, look at what it did for Kerry.

So, all the candidates signed the pledge and most kept to their word by withdrawing from MI if we follow through on going with an early primary. Granholm's DLC pal Hillary gets an advantage in MI and Granhom's chances of a choice cabinet appointment increases greatly.

Neat-o.

Julie

19. That makes sense, but it still sucks.
I think this is the year to start talking about a national primary. Iowa and New Hampshire aren't special enough to be worthy of picking the nominee for the rest of us.

Thanks for the explanation, I didn't know anything about the pledges you are describing.
