American invasion plan stirs fierce Saudi debate (IHT)
Echoes of 1973

LONDON Newly declassified British reports, revealing fears of a U.S. invasion of Saudi Arabia 30 years ago, are striking a remarkable chord inside the kingdom today.

At the very least they appear to have set off a fierce debate over the increasingly fragile rule of the Saudi royal family and its worsening relations with Washington.

Many Saudis, who believe America invaded Iraq to secure access to its oil, say they cannot exclude the possibility that their country will be next. That prospect is drawing widely different responses, which only highlight the huge sectarian, tribal and regional divisions among the Saudi population.

1. A pool of sweet crude waiting for a match to ignite it.
Time to stop suckling at the teat of Poppy's Petroleum Trough!

Slap an SUV tax on those Hummers and get rid of the SUV tax write-off.

Fully fund any non-profit alternative-energy development ... including ethanol, fuel-cell and vegetable-oil automotive engines - this should be 100%+ funded by the USGOV to improve our SECURITY.

Underwrite any solar, tidal or wind energy generation plants ...

Allow tax write-offs for the purchase of solar cells or other petroleum-avoiding improvements ...

Unseal the Cheney energy meeting transcripts, and start the perp-walks!

For starters anyway.

Actually, for starters, OUST BUSH.

3. Now THAT'S an energy policy that
I can enthusiastically subscribe to. The only thing I might add is imposition of a general gas guzzler tax instead of singling out Hummers.

2. 30 years ago? That would have
been Nixon. Okay.

Now, the Bushses and the Saudi Royal Family are like 2 bugs in a rug. Nothing will get between that friendship except a democratic president in 2004!

4. Bush loyalty to the Saudis will not outlast the Saudis' utility to Bush
The Bush family have a habit of turning on former co-conspirators, like Noriega and Saddam.

If Bush can secure Saudi oil and silence the Saudis, and it's cost effective, it will happen.

5. House of Saud, lots of wealth and big financial ties world-wide. I think
they take us down financially without firing a shoot.
