Ex-Army officer drops out of race for Congress

Oct 27, 2007 12:56 PM EDT

Elkhart, Ind. - A former Army captain who works with Blackwater USA has dropped out of the Republican race for the U.S. House in northern Indiana's 2nd District.

Chris Minor, 39, of Kokomo said in a news release Friday that the campaign would pose too much of a distraction to his work as an independent contractor in Iraq for the U.S. State Department.

"The vital work of providing intelligence analysis for our country's diplomatic efforts in Iraq demands my full attention," said Minor. "I must also take into account the burden that a political campaign would place upon my family."

Minor is returning to Iraq this month for an assignment that ends in April, a few weeks before the May primary.

He was seeking the GOP nod to challenge incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly, who is serving his first term in Congress after defeating Republican Chris Chocola last year.

10. He is being paid a lot more than our soldiers
and his comment that he is in "intelligence" makes me wonder if he is involved in assassination and torture, a corporate version of CIA's Phoenix Program.

12. Bushies need their Brownshirts, saigon68
Or else, WHO is going to do the dirty work of rounding up the Liberals, Blacks, and Gays?

I have no doubt he is paid more than a company of American soldiers and more than the entire non-com branch of the Iraqi Army.

Maybe I am exaggerating, just a little bit.

5. If you want to run for office, you need to quit your cushy contractor job
Talk about conflicts of interest! I am a state employee and BY LAW have to quit my job should I run for office.

Of course I would never vote for anyone who works for Blackwater anyway. He probably just figured out that none of his potential constituents like his employer.

6. Those Republicans, always wanting to spend more time with their family.
I wonder if he's thought about the burden that working for Blackwater in Iraq has been placing on his family.

9. "And another Blackwater mercenary bites the dust!" Too bad he couldn't fit it in!
Who wouldn't see a Blackwater-packed legislature as a step straight into the Twilight Zone! Or worse. Well, he's relatively young. He still has time to slaughter a lot of people now, and run for office later.
Best of both worlds.

13. Opposition May Ask Too Many Questions
About what he does and how he does it. Maybe a few very bad pictures start to surface. And his fellow Congresspeople could haul him in and ask about that stuff too. Better to be a contractor and keep it all confidential.
