McConnell reportedly earmarked $25M

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reportedly tucked $25 million in earmarked funds for British defense contractor BAE Systems into an appropriations bill.

McConnell, the Senate minority leader, inserted the money for three BAE systems into the bill that passed the Senate Oct. 3, The Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

BAE has a facility in the Lexington area and has also acquired United Defense Industries. BAE has given McConnell $53,000 in campaign contributions, while UDI donated $500,000 to his foundation.

McConnell marks funds for contractor
FIRM UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR BRIBERY

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is pushing $25 million in earmarked federal funds for a British defense contractor that is under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and suspected by American diplomats of a "longstanding, widespread pattern of bribery allegations."

McConnell tucked money for three weapons projects for BAE Systems into the defense appropriations bill, which the Senate approved Oct. 3. The Defense Department failed to include the money in its own budget request, which required McConnell to intercede, said BAE spokeswoman Susan Lenover.

BAE is based in Great Britain but has worldwide operations, including a Louisville facility that makes naval guns and employs 322. McConnell has taken at least $53,000 in campaign donations from BAE's political action committees and employees since his 2002 re-election. United Defense Industries, which BAE purchased two years ago, pledged $500,000 to a political-science foundation the senator created, the McConnell Center at the University of Louisville.

In June, BAE confirmed that the Justice Department is investigating possible corruption in its Saudi Arabian deals. According to British media reports, BAE set up a slush fund with hundreds of millions of dollars in a Washington, D.C., bank to bribe Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan in order to win weapons contracts. Bandar, who heads the Saudi National Security Council, has denied the allegation.

5. Add Mitch McConnell's seat to the list of Democrat victories in 2008
McConnell is among the 21 republican Senators up for reelection in 2008. I would throw him in the loser pile right now along with lamar alexander, elizabeth dole, and john warner.

There are going to be more. We will pick up five or six seats in the Senate this election cycle.

I wish that climate change denier james inhofe would get his pink slip in 2009.

15. Not only that, "it's ok: that's how the system works" is how they think.
In their stupid opinion, the Right-Wing die-hards see nothing wrong with it.

"He earned it. That's why we pay taxes for." (although, not many of 'em actually PAY any)...

"Why dough ya hate Amer'ka?"

Just another day in the Divided States of America.

Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 12:01 PM by MasonJar
make some great campaign slogans when Mitch runs next year. WOW! Maybe Kentucky can finally get rid of that loser. He's just recently lied about the children's health bill and been outed by his own staff; he also lied when he indicated that September would be a time for PUGS to get on board to get out of Iraq. He is building up a war chest of crimes for the opposition to use against him. Now maybe someone will actually get out there and run against the bastard.

She's a really odd choice for "Labor Secretary."

22. Why are we not talking about why the Dems allowed this 'slipping'.
Slipping this earmark in means to me that it was sneaky and others didn't know. ??? If yes, would this have gotten past the Dems? Would they have voted the way they did had they known?

Perhaps I don't follow the way things work with Dems?

How does a Republican get to slip something in when Dems are dominant?

24. I know a tiny, tiny bit about how Navy contracts with American companies
.... that is American - United States companies ...... during WWII provided a grounding that allowed some home ownership and education, plus some time for picnics and a paycheck. WHAT THE HELL is our Navy and our leaders doing giving contracts to overhaul originally built U.S. products to the BRITISH for a factory ON OUR SOIL? What an insult! This is our-in sourcing? This infuriates me.

Those damn Republicans are always talking about their fiscal conservatism and their french fried crap - just who is it that is giving away our country. Some of the same people who love George don't even know what outsourcing is. Some of the same people who invest in these BAE type companies just came back from the country club to watch their stock and talk to their immigrant maids and butlers. AND THEY CLAIM THEY ARE THE PATRIOTS!

This is offensive. American products being overhauled on our soil by foreigners and al lthose vigilantes are scoping the borders to pick up immigrants?

What a $%*&(*&(* country this is.

The United States of America will go down in history as the most hypocritical nation to ever exist in written history with some stupidity on a scale.

We are stupid for allowing this.
We might be stupid for allowing certain Dems into Washington.

25. They don't read the entire bill more than once and afterwards ...
they don't go back and reread what has gotten added unless they are alerted to it by their aides. These bills get to be the size of 20 thick novels by the time they are done. Dems don't always find out what has been added until after the bill has gone through congress.
Used to be earmarks did not have to say who sponsored them and what they were for exactly so there's been some improvement. McConnell is a DC insider whose corruption is well documented and sooner or later the voters will see he is corporate owned and operated and will replace him.
