Laura Bush accuses Dems of demagoguery on SCHIP
Source: The Hill

First Lady Laura Bush said Sunday that she is much more involved in policy than many people think and then went to bat for her husband on children’s health care and foreign policy.

Calling the state children’s health insurance program (SCHIP) “a perfect issue” for Democrats to demagogue on, Bush waded into largely uncharted public territory for her by taking exception to the party that opposes the president.

The first lady appeared genuinely upset about the Democrats’ tactics on the issue.

“It’s really easy to blame people for so-called voting against children,” Bush said in an interview on Fox News Sunday. The first lady went on to say that the bill would cover children who are not poor and added that the program is often used to cover adults.

70. If I recall correctly,
"Snowflake Kids" are the children that appeared with Bush at a photo-op after he vetoed some sort of pro-choice bill (or signed an anti-abortion bill).

They are called that because
1)they were created from frozen zygotes or eggs that could have possibly been destroyed
2) by some odd coincidence(?), they were all white.

Sorry if I'm fuzzy on the details, but I'm too busy to use the google at the moment.

2. Being a former school teacher, Pickles should know better
Demagogy (Demagoguery) (Dema from Dímos, Greek ?????, "people"; and agogy from ägein, ?????, "to lead")
refers to a political strategy for obtaining and gaining political power by appealing to the popular prejudices,
fears and expectations of the public — typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using
nationalist or populist themes.

Hey Pickles, you're married to one.

35. Actually, it's going pretty good.....
a lot of them are in the Army now, selling drugs and stealing weapons for resale later. Since the Army has dropped it's standards tremendously just to hit their reduced recruiting goals, and offered signing bonuses of tens of thousands of dollars, gang bangers are finding the Army a lucrative alternative to street crime. They still get to run the gangs, but now they have the protection of the U.S. Army to back them up.

Of course Laura the "Gang Czar" had absolutely NOTHING to do with this phenomenon since the title was just a bone thrown her way to make her think she's an actual productive member of society. What else does she have?....besides Valium and Bourbon, that is.

26. If Pickles was really that intelligent politically
She'd know that the best thing for her to do is stay out of politics. The right-wing and the Repugs admire because they think of her as the anti-Hillary, who just keeps her mouth shut about all of her "hubby"'s business. And the moderates and Dems who like her or don't mind her think that way because they think of her as harmless. The quickest way for her to lose popularity in both camps is to start spouting off, especially defending Shrub on a move he made that is so politically unpopular.

27. "Bush also insisted the perception of her staying out of her husband’s policies is false"

.........Bush also insisted the perception of her staying out of her husband’s policies is false.

“The fact is I’ve been involved for a long time in policy, and I think I just didn’t get a lot of coverage on it,” Bush said. “I was stereotyped as being a certain way because I was a librarian and a teacher…which are considered traditional women’s careers.”

Bush has been most involved with foreign policy in Africa and Burma. She said African women recently told her daughter Barbara that the president saved their lives.

She sidestepped a question about whether she weighs in on the president’s policies toward Iraq and Iran, shifting the focus back to Africa and Burma.

Dems are Demagogues?

This from the spouse of the demagogue-in-chief? Day after day of GWB threatening death will befall us if we don't surrender our Constitution to him? He's the decider, he keeps telling us. He and the Cheney-mobile driving us to the edge of the abyss, all the while telling us we have no choice. I don't really think Laura ought to be saying anything about demagoguery. Or perhaps she is as culpable as George. It does provoke some consideration: What kind of person would spend her life with GWB?

60. They have NO idea what 'not poor' means

Inflation

Plus huge insurance costs

Plus huge food costs

Plus huge education costs

Plus huge basic necessity costs

Plus huge housing costs

Plus huge gasoline costs....

It makes a NOT poor person pretty damn poor. How many of us are barely hanging on despite two earners in a household?

To live in an even modicum of comfort is beginning to take UPPER MIDDLE CLASS WAGES. (A simple house, a good grocery order every week, a decent vehicle, & basics for the kids - I am not talking about new cars or luxury items either)....

The poverty standard in this country is LUDICROUSLY low. I would love to see them live on 300% of poverty wages. Then, tell us about not being poor.

Fuckers.

71. Fuck off pickles!!!
Not only are your 'going to bat for your cocain alcoholic worthless husband, you are also batting for the insurance fraud industry as well.

I see right through her and their ilk, if we had more SOCIALIZATION of the things that work for the majority, we would not have all the problems we have now. If we left it up to those rethug nazis, you would be asked for your credit card number before the Fire department would respond to your call.

Health care should be nationalized for the sake of the people, in a just world it would have been 40 years ago. If I could I would dig Nixon up and burn whats left of that piece of shit.

Fuck You Pickles, take another Zanny or have an Oxy with that fat bastard Limpballs!!

86. Yes, she has.....
I clearly remember an interview with ole' Babs aka George Washington, when she said President Clinton was a demogogue.

So, yes, she's taking lessons from that old gasbag. You don't think she could have thought up that word on her own, do you? She's just as much an ignoramus as her husband.

92. Does Laura Even Know What She's Saying?
Does she know what "demagoguery" means?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demagoguery

"Demagogy (Demagoguery) (Dema from Dímos, Greek δῆμος, "people"; and agogy from ägein, ἄγειν, "to lead") refers to a political strategy for obtaining and gaining political power by appealing to the popular prejudices, fears and expectations of the public — typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist or populist themes.

The early 20th century American social critic and humorist H. L. Mencken, known for his "definitions" of terms, defined a demagogue as "one who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."

Though this definition emphasizes the use of lying and falsehoods, some point out that demagogy does not require such, but that skilled demagogues often need to use only special emphasis by which an uncritical listener will be led to draw the desired conclusion himself, seeding a belief that is self-reinforced rather than one based on fact or truth.

Demagogues may make use of logical fallacies, though persuasion may require no use of logic. While it may not rely heavily upon outright lies, the use of half-truths, omissions, and distortions are what define demagogy — it is, in essence, giving bad-faith arguments for the purpose of political gain......"

The only bad-faith, logical fallacies in this argument are coming out of her hubby's mouth.
