SolarAccess.com News Wesley Clark Seeks Renewable Energy Standard

by Edward X. Young, Staff Writer, SolarAccess.com
Peterborough, New Hampshire - January, 8, 2004 At the Town Hall in Peterborough, New Hampshire (the home base of SolarAccess.com) Democratic Presidential Candidate General Wesley Clark discussed issues concerning renewable energy as a means of protecting the environment, fighting global warming, and achieving energy independence.

Rather than separate himself from his audience by speaking from an elevated stage, Clark had the seating at the Town Hall rearranged into a circle, so that he could stand among the people during his extemporaneous presentation. Accompanied by former New Hampshire Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Fernald, Clark, casually dressed in a sweater and sports slacks, strode to the center of the hall.

Fernald introduced Clark to a cheering crowd of over 900, who braved frigid temperatures of 15 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill factor of 2 degrees to come to Peterborough (a town with a population of less than 6,000) to hear the candidate speak from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. yesterday.

Clark criticized President George W. Bush for having the audacity to claim that his current administration stands for family values while the President largely ignores viable renewable energy technology in favor of continuing to support polluting energy industries that are harming the air and water.

"You can't talk about family values if you're going to wreck our environment," said Clark.

1. YES YES YES
Investment in this would make the tech boom look like a lemonade stand. Not to mention make all of our lives much much healthier.

6. It had better happen soon or else the spoils will go to Europe/Japan...

Japan is kicking the crap out of us with hybrid cars - every new Prius sold is now sold at a profit. The Altima will available as a hybrid in 2006. The 2005 Lexus RX330 will be available with a 270hp hybrid engine. They're also way ahead of us with fuel cells.

Europe is taking a different approach. BMW, Daimler/Chrysler and Volks/Audi are huge with diesels in Europe. There is a turbodiesel Jeep concept truck at the auto show this year. The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg will have an available V10 turbodiesel which kicks out over 300hp, 530ft-lbs of torque and gets 17/23 mpg (in a 6000+ lb vehicle). A new Passat diesel is coming too.

2. This is good news
for those of us leaning towards Clark.

The only way we can save the economy, the environment create jobs and have real security is to focus on a real national plan for renewable energy.

Here's a plan going around called the Apollo Project. It certainly would be a good place to start.

4. One small point I keep making...
is that if we are to see economic growth and replace all those disappearing jobs, we have to create entirely new industries.

Renewable energy is one of those new industries. It's still in its infancy, but has the potential to put vast numbers of people to work.

It is not an extravagent expense, as some like to call it, and the benefits are not only environmental. It's a win for just about everyone.

8. Clark's job
After leaving the military, Clark's job (contrary to all the Jackson Steven's conspiracy threads) was as an investment banker putting together the financing for emerging technologies. He knows who and what is out there, and often says that there are technologies that are ready to go with a push from government. He believes in what is possible, and wants us to believe too.
