MONTREAL — Jean Chretien believes the United States invaded Iraq for oil.

The former prime minister told the popular Radio-Canada television show Tout le monde en parle why he thinks U.S. President George W. Bush declared war on the Middle Eastern country in 2003.

``There are some people who suspect it was oil, for the control of oil. . . ,'' Chretien said in French during the interview, which aired Sunday evening.

The show's host, Guy A. Lepage, then told Chretien he thinks everyone believes the invasion was for oil.

``Well, me too,'' Chretien said.

1. Or, simply to jack up the price whether we got their oil or not.
And, in that regard, it worked splendidly.

3. If I remember correctly, Chretien was very anti-Bush and would not send troops, etc.
He spoke out against the cabal, but then a winger took his place.

5. Not joining the "coalition" was the best thing Chretien did
On the whole I didn't much care for him, but you don't survive 40 years in parliament without having some great political instincts. I would trust his judgment of W.

8. Jean Chretien was one of the greatest Prime Minister, next to Pierre Trudue.

Chretien has always been know to speak his mind. Hmmm I wonder where he would have gotten the information about the oil war? Anyone? I never actually knew why he didn't support the Iraq war.

9. Duh. People still need to be convinced about this?
It is to control the world's oil so China doesn't get it first.
