Driver is arrested over car art
Police seize boyfriend's auto with nude dancer painted on it.

By Tom Spalding
January 10, 2004

An Indianapolis woman was arrested and her boyfriend's vintage Buick impounded because an image of a naked exotic dancer painted on it was visible to children.

The car's owner said Friday the image is art. Police say it is obscene.

1. Well It Depends
If the dancer was painted air-brushed, Heavy Metal-style graphics, I can't blame 'em. Those things are eye-sores.

2. LMAO! I LOVE HEAVY METAL!
I've been a subscriber for over 15 years.....hehehe. I know what you mean tho, but art is art for the sake of art. Might as well arrest all the sailors with gaudy naked women tattoos.

BTW, some of the Heavy Metal artists can paint some beautiful....voluptuous women. :D

Find me a living woman with a perfectly flawless youthful complexion (sp?), a 44 inch DD bust and a 13 inch waist and I'll show you a 14 year old boy's dirty sheets.

:P

(gawd I can't spell for shit this morning)

3. Tom Green's parents released on bail today
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 11:58 AM by mouse7
There was an episode of The Tom Green Show in which he installed a huge mural of a naked female on the hood of his parents mini-van.

Almost as good as the episode he painted his parent's house plaid.

13. Agreed. Our American Taliban would subject all culture...
...to a level suitable for children.

Traditional objections in the US worry about the effect of such censorship upon the tastes and interests of adults. That's a legitimate concern, but not the only one.

In light of draconian Bush rule, we must add concerns about fascism. A childish public is easier to control. And an obedient public, taking its cues for public policy at the end of a religious lash, all the moreso.

Thus, ironically, is the depiction of a nude woman on the side of a car -- especially an image found tasteless -- inextricably linked to our future. Only in a society where it is possible to give offense are men and women free.

More nude women on cars! More freedom, not less!

19. What about the guy who replaced Scott Newman?
I've not heard anything about him. Don't tell me it's more Goldsmythe-esque "Ambition in a Suit"...

8. well the mural DOES sound obscene!
i am all for free speech, and i will be the first to defend nudity, even in front of children, ESPECALLY a fictional image, ie. art. but the story says this is a mural of a "dancer" hanging onto a pole, and bento over showing her genitials, with guys watching. now that is not tasteful, and children should not have to see that...not that i would mind. however i regularly wear a t shirt with a nice bettie page nude in public.

12. Have you seen the image?
Or do you use ESP to arrive at your judgments? ;-)

It's perfectly conceivable that there is nothing sexist, crass or tasteless about the image in question. We'd have to see it in order to know.

11. Contemporary community standards = Multi-billion dollar sex industry
You know, if nude women dancing around poles for men was part of some extremely rare primitive Forbidden Pole Ritual practiced on remote mountainsides by torch light, this would make more sense. Then I could appreciate why depicting it on the side of a car that you drive through beautiful downtown Indianapolis, where nobody has ever heard of pubic hair, can be so shocking.

But the umbrage is harder to buy when one of the largest industries still functioning in this economy involves naked bodies and, well, poles of one kind or another. ;-)

True, Indy's not L.A. (and who can forget its hospitality to McKinnon and Dworkin's ludicrous civil rights ordinance?). And of course the Supreme Court, in one of its more sensible decisions, has allowed the US to preserve its pockets of make-believe virtue from the effects of modernity. We need the community standards test to isolate and quarantine the Salem urge.

But it would be a whole lot more honest for America, especially in an age where it goes around the world using Shock and Awe on what it sneers at as "primitive" civilizations, if it were to face up to its own shocking primitivism, its hilarious backwardness, and try to curb the Puritanism at the root of its lynch mob mentality.

15. Picture here
A pic accompanies the article. The "worst" part seems to be edited out though. http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=1594807

Apparently the woman believes it may be retaliation for a complaint she made the previous week.

16. WOW! That's really good!
It's painted on her own private property, I don't see how it's a menace to society.
