AMARA, Iraq, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Iraqi police opened fire on stone-throwing protesters demanding jobs in the southeastern city of Amara on Saturday and at least six people were killed, hospital and police sources said.

A doctor at a local hospital, who gave his name only as Assad, said six people were killed and seven were injured. Earlier, police officials said they opened fire after the protesters began throwing stones at the headquarters of the provincial government in the city.

Almost every window in the building housing the provincial government was smashed, residents said.

A surge in street violence in the south eastern Iraqi city of Amara has left at least seven people dead.

Hospital and police sources said six people were killed on Saturday after Iraqi policemen opened fire on a group of stone-throwing protesters.

Another Iraqi was shot dead by the occupation troops.

7. forces shot dead an Iraqi after he hurled grenades during the demonstratio
Maybe they should have waited until he threw a few more to be sure he was guilty? Is throwing grenades really a crime punishable by death? Where is the justice in this act against an innocent man just tossing grenades about? Shame upon those that shot this man for just throwing grenades in a crowd.

10. Ahhh, the liberation of a police state with no FREE SPEECH!
,...speak out, be suppressed,...throw a stone, get shot,...a bit different from the eye for an eye prospect, eh.

I guess they were fooled into actually believing they could take a stand and that they would have a say in their country, huh. Kinda like the rest of us. Of course, we do get to vote, on occasion.

Welcome to "liberation".

4. I guess Iraq is having a jobless recovery, too.
Perhaps we could save some ammo and avoid bad press by sending Larry Kudlow over to explain how sunny their future is.

And I wonder if the reporter got the facts right here. These Shia in the south, like the Kurds in the north, love us for toppling Saddam. Doesn't this reporter even read the news? :grr:

6. All the Iraqi People Need is a Good Tax Cut & Then They'll Have Jobs.
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 03:53 PM by David Zephyr
Don't these people listen to their new Caesar, if they will cut taxes on the wealthy Iraqis then these people would not need to be tossing stones for jobs, but would be working and participating in the great, recovering Iraqi economy.

Looks like the Bush crowd has trained the Iraqi police to murder anyone who dares protest for a jobs.
