Poll: Bush popular with Calif. Latinos
WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- President George Bush enjoys a 65 percent approval rating among California Latinos likely to vote in the fall election, a new poll by PRM Consulting says.

The survey also found 74 percent give Bush high marks in the conduct of the war against global terrorism.

"This support, coupled with the strong Latino support that Republican candidates received in the recall election against a strong Latino Democrat, seems to be a strong sign that Republican outreach efforts and the president's own efforts have gone a long way in cracking the strong Democrat base within the Latino Community," PRM Consulting's Richard Babcock said Friday.

Locally, the survey found that 58 percent of Latinos had an optimistic view about the direction California was taking under new Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger while only 34 percent said the state was going in the wrong direction.

PRM Consulting is a California based demographic, survey and research firm. Its findings were compiled out of more than 1,300 telephone interviews conducted Jan. 2-4, 2004, in both Spanish and English. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percent.

Can this possibly be accurate?

8. Yes, in fact it looks like a "strong smell"
I don't think I've ever seen the word strong used that many times in any statement much less one so short.

I 'm with you, I'd like to see the question or questions too.

4. UPI is not an accurate news source
Never heard of PRM consulting.

Wouldn't give it any credence.

I live in CA and I guarantee a dead fish would get elected over Bush here.

5. Bush and Ahnold are the exception, not the rule.
If Ahnold is to be believed, he WILL get licenses for illegals, after security concerns are addressed THIS month. But the repugs in the legislature are fighting it tooth and nails. Ahnold will simply play ball with the dems and get his way. Ahnold will get the kudos from the hispanics, but not for the rest of the repugs.

Same thing with bush and his immigration agenda. Even then there is some suspicion among hispanics, but they will accept what they can get. I don't see any benefit for the rest of the repugs. just him.

6. my 2 cents
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 05:24 PM by Chango
As a teacher in a heavily Hispanic high school in Southern California, I can attest that the students at my school are very gung-ho on the war and many of them aspire to join the armed services.

They also dig Arnold because of his celebrity status and "Terminator" image.

You're quite correct. I went to high school with this guy who wore camoflage to school everyday and aspired to join the military as soon as he could. He even studied his ass off just so he could graduate after the 1st semester of his senior year so he could rush off to the Army.

Militarism is idolized in my community, partly due to the "macho" imagery inherent in the guns and tanks, and I think partly because of the opportunity it affords many young people who would otherwise have no choice. And when it comes to having one's child join the military or a gang, most parents would choose the former.

I really would hesitate to throw in the towel yet, however. Eventually, most Latinos will come to realize the pitfalls of the Republican party's compassionate conservatism. It is inherent upon the Democratic party to NOT take this voting bloc for granted.

11. Just male Latino students, or do female/Latinas also
aspire to enlist? I'm curious as to the role of machismo, versus economic pressures. What's your thought on that? Have these students been getting military sales pitches from recruiters going back to junior high? Have you seen students drop out of high school and enlist? Anyone from your high school come back to the community as a seriously wounded Iraq War vet?

My understanding is that although the schools have to provide home addresses/phone numbers for students to recruiters, and let recruiters into the classrooms, that the students have the right to leave said classrooms during the military sales pitch. How has that played out at your school?

15. girls too
About 250 kids at my school are enrolled in a Marine junior ROTC program. About 1/4 to 1/3 of them are girls. Also, quite a number of girls have boyfriends in the program or who have graduated and are in the armed services. Family members too.

Sounds like a lot of bullshit to me.

Speaking for this California Latino, George W. Bush has no fans here in spite of his compassionate facade. Perhaps they interviewed a bunch of small business owners from Fontana or something.

13. Yeah, if that's not a vague company I don't know what is. More....
I recommend everyone read this whole article, below.

If you've been paying attention to the black box voting discussion, you know that the accuracy and integrity of some jurisdictions is VERY questionable, at a minimum.

To me, one of the puzzle pieces that didn't fit was, what about the polling? If the polling is accurate, how could they steal elections and get away with it.

Read this. It's an eye opener.

The Public Opinion Polling Fraud

from Z Magazine <http://www.Zmag.org>
by Marc Sapir and Mickey Huff
http://www.retropoll.org/polling_fraud_z-mag.htm

Americans have existed under a cloud of media and government induced fear since the Creel Commission at the start of WWI. As fascism took hold FDR warned: the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Then the anti-communist hysteria and the witch hunts of McCarthyism and HUAC gripped the United States and propelled the nation into another era of paranoia and distrust. By the time the Cold War ended, Americans were accustomed to being afraid, whether at the behest of politicians or on media command. Even after the spectre of communism had dissipated by the dawn of the 21st century, politicians capitalized on fear mongering against hidden foreign enemies. Meanwhile, the nightly news droned on about street crime, sex scandals, violence, while titillating the public with reality programming.

September 11, 2001 changed that persistent phobia in a crucial way. It allowed government and media to focus Americans' fears tangibly. The reality tv shows paled in comparison to the endless desensitizing reruns of the collapse of the WTC. Terror alerts and false alarms became the order of the day. Suddenly, new villains were omnipresent, not just "over there." Poll after poll exclaimed that the country now supported the unelected and once unpopular president, were terrified, and demanded action. Media institutions offered little analysis to explain America's anxiety which was, after all, almost a century in the making. Rather than engaging in sober critical discourse our spin doctors kept it simple and simply cast blame. We were told that "evildoers" hated our freedom. Daily polls told us what we thought, and that we all thought alike, even though everyday Americans suspected we did not. Michael Moore's Oscar-winning documentary "Bowling for Columbine" addressed the issue of fear and violence in America and how media and government created this very climate, yet most in the press missed that crucial opportunity for a national therapy session.

So how can we clarify the role that the corporate media and their incessant polling play in our collective social mindset?

Okay, after you've read that, consider the following:

CA has more electoral votes than any other state, waaaay more. In fact, 55 of 'em, which is 20% of what you need to win the presidency.

Of the larger states, CA has a higher percentage of Hispanics than any other state -- 34%, nearly 12 million Hispanics.

CA has a new governor, of the Republican variety, put in by the rarely-used method of recall. A significant percentage of the state used Diebold voting machines, and those, according to the official audit by state auditors, were NOT certified -- auditors recently reported they could not find ONE certified Diebold machine in the state. ("Voting Machine Maker Dinged -- AUDITOR SAYS SOFTWARE WASN'T APPROVED," Dec. 17, 2003, Mercury News http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/politics/7511145.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp)

One reason that new governor was "elected" or whatever, was that Gov. Davis was criticized from the word "go" during the blackouts and energy crisis. He took the criticism at the time, even though several years later we found out that Enron and their buddies stole billions from CA while the White House refused to act or even meet with CA Senators. Bush's appointed FERC and other regulators have been, um, not real generous in awarding CA damages or repayment.

Okay, now for my opinion.

My opinion: If you're Karl Rove, you're preparing the masses to witness the wholesale stealing of CA's vote by convincing them that Hispanics love Bush.
