Guests Asked to Leave Vegas Hotel-Casino
Guests Asked to Leave Vegas Hotel-Casino

By CHRISTINA ALMEIDA

Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Guests staying at a landmark hotel-casino were told to leave Saturday, a day after federal agents shut down the casino floor and seized money to pay for unpaid employee benefits.

The front doors were locked and yellow police tape greeted visitors to Binion's Horseshoe hotel-casino, a downtown Las Vegas fixture for 52 years and home to the wildly popular World Series of Poker.

``It's the end of an era,'' said Jim DiGiorgio, an adult film director who was told to find a new hotel Saturday.

Gamblers watched in disbelief Friday night as U.S. marshals shut down the casino floor. The agents were enforcing a court order against the property, which has not paid about $3 million in pension and health insurance benefits since last summer for an estimated 400 union employees, said D. Taylor, secretary-treasurer of Culinary Union Local 226.

2. So why don't the Feds padlock airlines?
**Air is much more egregious (and a major debtor to the Gov) in their denial of employee benefits. **Air terminated the pilots' pension plan on 3/31/2003.

(BTW: There is a company gag order on all employees now. Can't bad-mouth **Air in public. WE WHO GAVE BACK THE LARGEST CONCESSION IN THE HISTORY OF THE AIRLINES, THE **AIR PILOTS' $650+ MILLION/YEAR GIVE-BACK AND TERMINATED PENSION PLAN, ARE FUCKING GAGGED!

Fuck the fat bastards. Now: FULL PAY 'TIL THE LAST DAY.

8. Let me guess...
Is that the Same "SCREW-S" Air that is demanding MORE givebacks from the Pittsburgh Airport Authority?

I'm just guessing, Demo Tex...

10. Didn't Bush pressure AmericanAirlines
to force concessions from employees in return for govt help after 9-11?

..and didn't the big shots turn around and give themselves more money?

Too bad the Feds didn't put yellow tape around Enron Field, or Arthur Andersen after they stole all those pension funds with their ponzi scheme accounting.

3. Binion's is great, was just there in November
Ate at their swanky 24th floor steakhouse, and had a bargain $4.99 late night steak dinner in their coffee shop.

The dealers, and most other employees were very friendly, and I hope they
all find jobs soon.

Binion's was managed very poorly, and I hope they reopen soon.

12. The movers in LV won't let it sit idle for long
Heck, maybe Jackie Gaughan will snap it up. He already owns a large chunk of downtown (the Plaza, Las Vegas Club, Gold Spike, and El Cortez).

4. Pan Am 'used' the pensions in the 80's. Mesaba took the pension

a year or so ago.

Enron took a variety of plans for a variety of people in a variety of states. And some of the money is probably sitting in Grand Cayman or the Kingdom of Enron on the isle of Enron right now.

Where was the FBI? Where is the FBI?

Token gesture to make it look like the rule of law applies somewhere.

5. Great points, HC
BTW, Mesaba pilots, free to strike, have agreed to negotiate beyond deadline without declaring a strike. That news hot off the ALPA wire.

6. Wow, poor Bartcop
I think that's where he's having his next Pokerfest - or at least where he hoped to have it.

visiting Binions is one of those things that were on my list of things to do while still alive. Hopefully they can get it all straightened out in due time.

13. Binions has been in decline for years.....
the family running it is crooked and incompetent. Benny Binion must be rolling over in his grave to see what happened to his creation.

I knew they were in trouble years ago when I went to play in the WSOP and saw they'd taken down their "million dollar" display. They had a million dollars encased in plexiglas. I guess they needed the cash.

It had been there for years, if not decades. If a casino needs a million in cash, stat, it's poorly run.

15. We like Binions
We were just there in October. We find downtown Vegas a lot friendlier than the Strip, plus the minimums are much lower.

Hubby got lucky in October and won a $1000 playing blackjack there one afternoon. I'm glad he was able to cash out.
