JERUSALEM (AP) - Palestinian leaders on Saturday reasserted the right to unilaterally declare an independent state in the absence of a peace deal with Israel, responding to Israel's own threats of one-sided action.

The go-it-alone declarations reflect both sides' frustrations with more than three years of fighting and stalled peace talks.

No one is going to "grant" it to them--besides, the right to self-rule is inalienable according to our own founding documents.

By your reading of our documents, I could declare self rule tomorrow. It doesn't quite work that way.

They are split between Gaza and the West Bank with Israel between them. I call that one flaming hell of a security problem.

Because the independent state they want is the state of Israel.

But, hey, don't let that stop anybody.

Meantime, they are sitting, I hear, on a huge natural gas discovery which can only be developed if there is peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Maybe they ought to work on insuring a cut of the profits.
