Modern skeleton U.S. bases likely to be located in northern Poland

Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdziñski presented the Sejm Defense Commission with an outline of the terms that it will negotiate with the USA regarding locating its military bases in Poland.

"The new concept of stationing American forces in Europe is the result of the changing situation in the world," explained the Minister. Cold War large bases which assumed a mass attack from the East will be replaced by so-called skeleton bases, which allow rapid transport and training of forces, as well as serve as air bases. These would be used to combat, for instance, terrorism.

is what a US embassy attache working in an eastern bloc country told me over the holidays. "Poland, Romania and Bulgaria are lousy places to put US bases. I doubt it will roll."

If it does, our military can plan on finding all types of unexploded ordinance and leaky chemical weapons under the ground, remnants of the former Soviet days. This is another pork-barrell boondoggle for Halliburton and Bechtel.
