Florida's Harris May Shake Up 2004 Season
By KEN THOMAS, Associated Press Writer

MIAMI - One of the central figures in the contentious 2000 presidential recount in Florida, former secretary of state Katherine Harris, may soon find herself in the middle of another presidential contest — as a GOP candidate for U.S. Senate.

Harris, now a first-term congresswoman, is weighing a decision to enter the Republican primary to compete for the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Bob Graham.

Oh please let it be! If she runs imagine how high we can crank Democratic turnout in Florida.

5. Yes but she lusts for power.
And says that she is excited about her decision. And has a lot of money. She might do it.

9. Man she really looks like she is in drag.
Even full in full body shots, she has a nice figure but it is so surgically crafted that it's original shape comes into doubt.

4. Please RUN
The Florida Democratic Party may not be able to generate election day turnout, but she can! Why do you think Mel Martinez is the White House approved candidate?

8. Yes, yes let her run
It will help remind us of what we have to do, get this administration the hell out! We have to invigorate the anger we had in 2000.

13. Don't count your Harrises before...
Cruella should not be underestimated. One, there's going to be a lot of money behind her, and two, the Florida Democratic machine didn't exactly come out slugging in the governor's race, did it. This one's far from in the bag.

14. Not only that, she will lose...
She is a very polarizing figure in a State that has traditionally sent moderate/progressives to the US Senate. Even our Repug Senators have typically been moderate.

She will win the Repug. primary handily... she will lose the General election by close to 10%...

15. It'd be great to hear from Florida DU'ers on Bob Graham's Senate spot
as this campaign progresses.

I'm really steamed that he was up to run for President, but got miffed when he didn't generate the support he wanted, and decided to walk away from his VERY respectable position in the Senate.

Surely wish someone could talk him into the idea of running again for the Senate.

It'd be good to find out if Peter Deutsch has a chance, as a Democrat.

Also, you'll note that the mayor of Miami-Dade, Alex Penelas, the Cuban-American who screwed over Al Gore ROYALLY during the 2000 campaign and vote recount is the Cuban "Democrat" for a position also attracting Bush's choice, Cuban-American Mel Martinez.

Does anyone have any information on these guys?

16. On the other hand
I can't stand the possibility that the "voting" machines have already picked her as the winner. I don't think she could win a fair election, but this is Florida afterall.

18. The Miami Herald claims she has "rock star status among the Republican
faithful." Doesn't that just about make you gag?

CAMPAIGN 2004
Bid for Senate by Harris would create a frenzy
The race for Bob Graham's Senate seat will be in the national spotlight if Katherine Harris, of 2000 election fame, decides to run, possibly against White House wishes.
BY LESLEY CLARK
lclark@herald.com

WILL SHE RUN?: Katherine Harris, Florida's ex-secretary of state. AMY E. CONN/AP

U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris' tantalizing talk of a U.S. Senate bid, the buzz of political circles from Tallahassee to

Washington, underscores one certainty: Should Florida's former secretary of state decide to run, she would transform an important Senate race into a national event.

Few other candidates considering a Senate run make the Drudge Report, after all.

As the Republican icon jetted last week between her Sarasota congressional district and Washington, D.C., saying that she was close to a decision, her actions fueled speculation that the White House -- loathe to relive the bitter 2000 election in a state central to the president's reelection -- was pulling out the stops to convince the GOP star of that election to sit it out until 2006.

Harris and a White House spokesman downplayed the talk of an intervention, but Harris and her rock-star status among the Republican faithful could seriously complicate matters for former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martínez. A Cuban-born Republican and the only Hispanic member of Bush's Cabinet, Martinez left his Washington job just last week and plunged into the race at the administration's prodding. (snip/...)
